Salt air is hard on scooter !
« on: June 19, 2016, 01:30:58 PM »
Visiting parent in Florida. ...and once again I am noticing a lot of rust on the ferrous metals and corrosion on the alloys of these scooters. Genuine Buddy's all rusted up....mirrors...exhaust...wheels...plastics faded...and  Vespas with corrosion on any visible alloys and faded seats.
Sun and salt air.....is very hard on scooters !
Wonder what you Florida owners use to slow down the damage?

For a scooter guy from the Midwest. ...all these scooters are a blast.
Saw my LIKE go by 15mins after arriving in Florida!

Bought my first Goldwing down on the Texas Gulf Coast and it had surface rusting on all the chrome and it was garaged. Bothered me so much that I sold it and will never buy another bike near an ocean.

The only sure fire prevention  for rust is frequent washing. Thankfully, I live in Tallahassee where rust is no problem at all. But 30 miles to the south in Saint Marks is a totally different thing.

ACF-50 helps.
I live less than a quarter mile from the North Sea and my scooter lives outside uncovered.
Its 3 years old and got almost 30,000 miles on the clock.
Fork sliders, stands, shocks and anything else that goes rusty get brush painted with black Hammerite smooth once a year.
The exhaust silencer is a lost cause, painting it lasts about two months, it really needs a stainless one.
The white bodywork once glossy is now fashionably matt.

I'm a block from the beach.
Wash them, DRY them and a little wax now and again and all my rides look near new.
It's not that hard if you give a damn.

That said many youngsters leave them out 24/7 and that will give a scoot that Florida "patina" you see so often.
