Do It Yourself Valve Adjustment
« on: August 24, 2013, 05:12:46 PM »
I have a Like 200i. With the help of an excellent YouTube video the valve clearance adjustment is really easy. How is doing the check on a Downtown 300i?
Even though I love my Like, I am considering getting something bigger. It would be nice to be able to get on the freeway once in a while, and maybe even do a weekend trip. I have started watching the for sale cycle trader adds for this scooter, but if I can't do the valve clearance myself, that would be a deal breaker.
I don't like going much beyond the complexity of an oil change, but the Like was so easy. It took me an hour fifteen minutes, and that was including playing and pausing the video while I was doing it. I'm guessing you would have to remove or move the radiator on this scoot. Any help would be appreciated.

On the downtown all you have to take off is the under seat tub,  and the valve cover is clear,  it takes more time to find my 3 mm. square nut holder than to open the seat and do the valve job,.  3 mm. nut driver is a # 2  philips screw driver with the tip removed,.

The DT 300i is great on the hiway but if I had done more research into scooters ( I was coming off 17 years on a Yamaha 750 ) I would have found a Honda Silverwing or Suzuki Burgman 650 for the weight and extra power factor and more leg room and seat comfort. But they would not have yielded the 74 mph I average with my DT. So at the endo fo the day, I am happy with my DT 2013 300i, it was a steal at the price I got it so I cant complain.

Thank you for the opinions and the input about the valve clearance check. Now if I should find a good deal I'll go ahead and buy one.

You get to adjust 4 valves on the DT 300i instead of two. Take note of the rller followers while you are in there.

Can you post the link to the utube video on adjusting the valves on the DT 300.
I would appreciate it. My biggest question is how to find T.D.C. once I can get the cylinder to the top then I can adjust them.

Do you know how to move the crank to get to top dead center,. look on the muffler side and there is a 2 inch plastic with a slot in it,turn that out and inside there is a nut ,put a socket on it and turn till it is at top center,. you will see two round holes on each side and another hole on the top dead center side then check the valves to see if you can put the .1 mm. tool in all of the valves it should be a little tight or a little loose,.  you will know it is TDC.

The video I as referring to is for the Like 200i. I don't know if it would be helpful for the DT300i. If you want to look, just search Kymco Like 200i valve clearance check.

I have never done my valves yet as my mileage is pretty low. That video should be pretty helpful for me when I get around to doing mine. I assume you line up the holes the same way in the Downtown to get to TDC. One thing I did notice though was when he was disconnecting the battery he took the positive terminal off first and then the negative terminal. I was always told to take off the negative terminal first and when reinstalling put the negative terminal on last.

Yes, he had the battery disconnected backwards. I'm not even going to bother disconnecting it at all next time. I'll just throw a rag over it incase I drop a wrench on it.

I don't think it's necessary to disconnect the battery on a Downtown. You won't be dropping any tools on battery where it is situated away back there. In the video I'm sure he just did it for his own safety in case he dropped something on it.

I typed in kymco downtown valve adjust on youtube and there is a video by Felix Perez on doing the valves on a Superdink 300i (same as the Downtown 300i). There is no sound on the video and the text is in Spanish. If you don't understand Spanish it doesn't matter that much as it shows the whole procedure for doing the valves.
