Night riding
« on: September 01, 2013, 11:58:00 PM »
Any tips on night riding? I'd like to take my scoot to work once the summer rainy season is over. I've ridden once just on local streets in my neighborhood at Christmas and wasn't too comfortable. I work long hours so there's a good chance it'll be dark at least one way.
Also, any idea how much it would cost to get an led headlight installed?
Thanks

Foremost in my mind for my night riding is to stay on streets that I know well. You know where the pot holes are, the big manhole covers, etc. I never venture out onto new streets at night now - and when I did I often wished I hadn't.

Of course the basics are to drive within your lights - match your speed to your lights.
Since I often roll off the throttle when approaching turns or stops - and because doing this does not light your brake lights to signal the cars behind that you are slowing - I often just touch the brake lever enough to light the brake light.....
Check you brake lever and you will likely see that pulling it a little will not actually apply the brakes - just light your rear brake light.

Also, at night I never venture out onto multi-lane boulevards with lots of traffic and lots of light from signs and stores. These many distractions for car drivers make me think they will be less likely to notice me on a scooter.

I know many scooterists probably think otherwise - and ride pretty much where ever they want at night. I am pretty conservative. But if I'm not comfortable at any time on my scooter - I figure I should park the scoot and take the Scion. Scoot riding should be fun.

Also, I should note that since I take my scoot to work in the dark and the rain - I  just take my time and go the shortest route. With a extra red LED bike light turned on - mounted below my top case at the rear of my scooter.
No goofing in the rain at night.

Take your time, be safe.

Thanks Stig
I'll be on local roads around 0600 and know them well. I'get a high vis vest too.
