Kymco Rep. Read this We have a Problem! Headlights Do Not Work!!!
« on: September 05, 2013, 05:48:08 PM »
Many super 8s have a problem with the lights and charging system read the headlight thread on the super 8 section.   This problem needs to be addressed and FIXED before someone is killed!!!!   >:(

A RECALL is needed not just a memo to dealers.  It is clear Kymco knows there is a problem why cant someone with knowledge get on this forum and explain the problem and what is required to fix it.

Everyone should e-mail the USA Kymco office in Spartanburg SC and make a complaint. I called my local rep and she said she has only heard of one other Super 8 with the light problem. The dealers are fixing them but not complaining to Kymco to get a recall. The issue is wide spread and a huge safety concern.

It will take someone getting killed for them to take note if no one complains to them. Start making threats of a group class action lawsuit and they might give us a hand.

Also start making comments about it on their Facebook page about the light problem. https://www.facebook.com/KYMCO.Scooters?ref=share

I talked to the rep for the state of florida.....they are aware of the wiring DEFECT and the cause can be the ecm or light controller , the dimmer switch the headlight bulb or bulbs themselves, a loose connection or dirty connection to any of these or a combination.  He said if 1 filament burns out in either bulb the entire lighting system goes out... :o

I asked if there is a bypass around the controller that wont blow fuses....Yes there is but Kymco cant give that info because the fed gov. has not approved it nor do they intend to have it approved because it would cost to much??

So I ask what do all of us do then.......He gave NO answer other than im sorry so many are having this problem and he will pass it on to his boss......??  At some point nearly ALL S8s will have this problem!!   Think about that before you buy one!

Bottom line, live with it, sell it or find someone that can rewire the damn things.    >:(

Please everyone post on their Facebook, Twitter and youtube channel about the light problems. They don't want the bad publicity and may fix the problem if enough complain.

This mod will remove the headlamp controller module, and substitute two 30 amp relays, one for high beam and one for low beam. The headlamp will be on when the key is on.

This gets rid of the crazy designed half brightness at idle, and gives full system voltage. This mod will also keep the headlamp current draw on the dedicated circuit that is intended for headlamps, as opposed to the wire jumper method which overloads the accessory circuit.

I used blazer 5 pin 30 amp relays from Oreilly Auto Parts,
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/BLZ0/DF005W/N0381.oap?ck=Search_N0381_-1_-1&pt=N0381&ppt=C0335

Most 4 or 5 pin relays could be used as a substitute. NOTE that most 5 pin relays have a pin #87 and pin #87A and those are normally open and normally closed terminals. The Blazer Baja DF005W has two #87 terminals which are connected internally.

Thanks for the info. There has been many threads on the repair and fix of the Super 8 light system.  This thread is just to get Kymco to admit they have a dangerous product and should take measures to fix the issue and possible save someone's life.

The stock setup almost always fails and could easily get someone killed while riding at night.
