overheating and parts availability
« on: August 09, 2009, 01:46:56 PM »
Hello, new guy here.  I was just on modernbuddy.com.  The Buddy was just taken out of the running for my bike of choice, no doubt about it.  Lots of complaining going on because the folks cannot get parts.  Sometimes something as simple as a seal or a piece of body work might take two weeks or two months.  Kinda silly.  I have heard that Kymco has a warehouse in NC and that parts are ALWAYS about two days wait.  Is this correct?  Does anyone on here have problems getting parts?  Or are the Kymco folks really that good at getting the stuff out?  Also, I have been thinking of getting a Vespa, Sym, or Kymco for some time.  I think a bike in the 200-250 cc range would be great.  Only thing about the Kymcos is that they are not water cooled until the 250 cc models.  I am a big guy of about 250.  Would the 200 be a problem?  I'm a bit paranoid about Kymco not including water cooling on this bike.  Does anyone riding a People S 200 have this problem?  Thanks for all the help and responses.  Ride safe.

My local Genuine dealer has had very few problems getting parts for the Buddy. Same for Kymco. If anything, Carter Bros. seems to be the spottiest of the bunch, in getting quick parts for SYM models.

For these three lines, my dealer gets parts in 2-7 days, typically... somewhat longer for SYM for most parts, but not all.

And MRP is a frickin' nightmare.

For a number of reasons I would actually prefer a scooter that has air cooling.
If it is good enough for Suzuki Bandit 1200 it would be good enough for 200 cc Kymco too. :)

oh, not me.  Down here in Houston the Harley riders and 150cc scoots & below have to be very careful about sitting in traffic at the lights.  In the heat of the summer, like right now, the pavement temps are over 125' and when  that bike ain't movin' then it's doin' nothin' but heatin' up.  Water cooled all the way for me.
I breathe therefore I scoot!

I live in the area where air temperatures in the summer regularly reach 38 C (100 F) in the shadow and I often see temperature on my handlebar-mounted thermomemeter of around 45-48 C (113-118 F).
I have 220-230 lbs, my girlfriend has 180+ lbs and we often ride together on the same bike. I live at the top of the hill and the town where I go to work daily is 12 kms away with some 12-17 % downhills.

Even on water cooled scooters that have a fan, the fan turns on only at temperatures of 35+ C when driving uphill in a traffic jam conditions.

The fan on my Kymco People 250S has been turned on exactly ONCE in 4600 kms.

I have never had overheating problem on any of the bikes or scooters I have owned, ranging from several 50 cc air cooled scooters, 50 cc water cooled, 125 cc air cooled, 200 cc water cooled... up to 750 cc air cooled sports bike. Some of them had water cooling + fan, some did not.

p.s. I would not comment on Harleys, they are not exactly known for the quality of built, but that would be a completely separate issue, probably the one that could cause a lot of uproar and rant.  8) ;D

Kymco parts take about a week here in my area. But some can also be had on the Net.

And the build quality on my Harley is great. Every bit as good *( and in some areas better) than any of the Japanese bikes I've had. ;)
