Oil and transmition fluid change help.
« on: September 29, 2013, 02:12:39 AM »
It's time for my first oil change on my Like. The manual calls for 4 stroke 15W-40 motor oil. Well, can't seem to find that anywhere. I finally called my dealer and they told me they always use 10W-40 in every scooter. Wondering if this is ok or not. And yes I'm brand new to all of this so any help would be great.
Also, it calls for the transmition fluid to be changed as well. The manual says it needs SAE 90. Of course I can't find that either. The only thing I can find is hi performance racing transmition oil SAE 80W/85W. Would this be fine to use on my Like?
Any other tips on this be great.

Thanks everyone and ride safe, mscmkr

I am using 75-90W and 10W 40 with no issues. Pay attention to the temperature charts on page 32 of the manual for the engine oil.

Using AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke Synthetic 10W-40 Scooter Oil (purchased on-line from them since I could not find locally. $8.30 Qt.)

And Pro Honda Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 80W/90 purchased from my local motorcycle dealer $4.95 / 8 Oz. bottle - with nicely pointed tip for filling w/o spilling!

Both of these products were recommended by the service manager at my dealer for my Kymco - even though they do not stock the Amsoil scooter specific oil. "There are several good oils for your scooter - but none would be better than these two."

I have @ 3000 miles on my like since April 2013. It uses no oil between changes.
Per my log : have changed engine oil 6 times - and gear oil 4 times.
Due to change the gear oil next w/e.

Tip : check your engine oil dip stick before draining. If it is at the proper level - then drain, save and measure what came out. Replace with that much oil ! Careful not to overfill.
I drain at both places - the plug and the plug/spring/screen. Rinse the screen with gas, dry and replace.

0.18 liters is equal to 6.09 ounces (US, fluid)
After draining the geat oil I pour out 1/4 cup (2 oz.) of gear oil from the 8 oz. bottle and squirt the remainder into the refill hole for the grear oil.

Working with soft alloys here - do not over tighten. I don't do 'tight' - I do snug. (worked on aircooled alloy VW engines for 40+ yrs - no problems)

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

With engine oil be aware of the required API rating. Don't use an oil below the specified rating. Going above the recommended rating is okay. I use 5/40 synthetic BMW motorcycle oil and 80/90 BMW motorcycle gear oil. It's the same oil my dealer uses if you were to take it to them for service.
