No Acceleration
« on: August 11, 2009, 11:35:47 AM »
I have just bought a XC500 with carburetta. In town it's fine when on freeway cruising at 125km/h and I open throttle for uphill or to pass truck it is almost no reaction, only when speed dropped to below 120km/h suddenly feels the accelaration full power and accereate to 150km/h. Is there something wrong with this machine why it has to drop down to less than 120 before accelerate properly, can someone advise me? Thanks from Durban RSA.

Good Day to you Guys/Gals. I want to apologise for just crashing the forum like I did yesterday. I was so excited with my new scoot and then finding this forum I lost it and was so worried about what I thought was a problem with my scoot I just shouted for help without even introducing myself or greeting the members. I apologise, sorry guys/gals. Here in my neck of the woods there is not many of these scoots around and the backup and information seems very limited. I never even received a toolkit, owners manual or service book with this scoot (salesman says they were stolen) and I'm very scared that I have spent my hard earned and will struggle with service and taking care of my scoot. Thanks and regards from Durban RSA.

Welcome Bryan!

Yes, there is something wrong with your scoot.

My X500 carb. had a small disruption in the carb. membrane, which could only be seen when bending it. That caused a dramatic loss of power at higher revs.
After about 5000km I experienced the very same effect like you. The disruption was still small, I think. I thought it was the problem mentioned below and tried another carb. spring, but the power loss still happened sporadic.
Later on, I never couldn't accelerate to higher speed at all. Then I found the disruption and the dealer gave me a new slider (membran can't be changed alone).

Another known issue is the carb. spring. Later models got a new spring from a hyosung motocycle, this new spring is longer and thinner and of golden colour.

Perhaps this is the solution to your problem too.
If not, check the variomatic. Rollers/sliders and belt.

Hi ts1, thanks for your input. I called the dealer and dscussed it with him. He tried to convince me it was the plug, saying the import plug is sub-standard and when they do the first service they will put in a NGK and all will be fine. Now I'm no mechanic but that doesn't make sense to me, I'm thinking if it's cruising at 125km/h the plug is firing and opening the throttle should increase the fuel/air mixture therefore bigger combustion therefore more power while the plug still keeps firing the same. Anyway I did mention the spring and diphrame. I will take the scoot in next week for the service then discuss it with the workshop dude and see what he can do. At the moment I have taken the two grey panels off that run along the tunnel, the two brake resivor covers and the black cover thing that screws down onto the sheild and taken them to the paintshop. I want those parts colour the same blue as the rest of the scoot so they will only be back maybe Monday then I can put it all together again and arrange the service. Regards from Durban RSA.

Finally got the panels back from the paintshop and put it all togther again. Looks great. Used the scoot to work this morning and when I arrived there was coolant leaking all over the place. Only done 570 km and this happens. Oh no sure hope this is not a sign of serious trouble. Phoned the dealer and the fetched the scoot. The dude says it is a faulty thermostat and they have ordered a new part and the scoot should be ready be Monday. Regards from Durban RSA.

Brian,
That sure is a beautiful colour on your Kymco 500.  What year is it?
My scooter is white and black and I just love it.
So far the only problem I've had is the oil service sensor which was replaced under warranty by the dealer.

Hi Rozz, nice to hear from you. Yes that is really a beautiful colour blue, I have to admit I love blue and thats what sold the scoot. I wanted the fuel injection model but the only clour available was orange then when I walked into the showroom and saw that one that was it. I also ride a Suzuki GSX650F, almost the same blue and white, and a BMW K1200RS yes you guessed it also blue and white. As for the model, although here in my neck of the woods the system shows the scoot as a 2009 model purely because it was first registered in 2009, I think the scoot was likely manufactured in 2008. The guys at the workshop tell me that the thermostat is faulty and they are replacing it today, so I asked them to do the first service while they have the scoot there its done almost 600km and I don't like asking time off work if I can avoid it just in case the boss realizes they can manage without me. Regards from Durban RSA. PS Rozz post a picture of your scoot I'd like to see it.

Well I got my scoot back from the first service (only 600km) on Tuesday, nearly had a mishap when I left the workshop and instinctively pulled in the clutch, scoot stopped quickly and I nearly didn't get a foot down quick enough.  Used it to work yesterday. The scoot goes well and I am enjoying it very much. I have to get used to releasing that handbrake, keep forgetting. The original problem that I first noticed with the acceleration is still there but I will wait awhile and see if things will get better, at least until it has 1600km on the odo which is the breakin period then if it is still causing that problem I will start making a noise about it. Today it's raining so I took the lazy route and used 4 wheels, after all I cleaned the scoot last night and I don't want it getting dirty in this weather. Hopefully the weekend will be clear because I want to take out the scoot for some longish runs and would like to put at least another 600km on it. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi There, Just happened to stop at another bike shop on Saturday, they are also Kymco agents, so decided to talk to the mechanic there about my acceleration problem. He seemed to know right off what I was talking about and said its either the carb or a problem with the rollers, what ever that meant, and said I must bring it in he will sort it out under the warrenty. So I will do that soon. Otherwise I sure am enjoying my scooter even after 40+ years of biking, never dreamed it would be so much fun. Regards from Durban RSA.

He seemed to know right off what I was talking about and said its either the carb or a problem with the rollers, what ever that meant ...
If Carb:
diphrame as already mentioned or the slider (with the diphrame attached) can't really slide. As I had the similar problem, I thought of the last possibility too and put a drop oil on the slider, but it didn't help (in my case). Easy mechanics, can be done through open helmet storage and carb maintenance cover.
If rollers:
The rollers should be able to roll smoothly with no grind. That's needed to change the transmission ratio. It's unlikely to happen after only 600km, perhaps a material failure. To check the rollers you need special tools, opening the central crankshaft nut.

Well heres the next in my acceleration saga. I took the scooter in on Thursday for a 1000km service and explained the problem carefully to the dude. He tells me he checked the carb and it was fine then he found that there was a rough spot on th clutch shaft which he thinks was causing the problem so he polished and regreased it and says its ok now. Going home was in peak traffic so no cruising. Friday on the way to work, joined the motoway and accelerated hard to fit into the flow, good acceleration through to 120km/h then stayed at that speed for awhile until the first uphill then it starts dropping revs again and I feed in more throttle to compensate, no action at all, I keep opening the throttle gently until its full open, still no power, speed keeps dropping so I have to get the hell out of the traffic flow by then because I'm starting to hold up the flow. Just after I move over into the slow traffic and the speed has dropped to 100km/h the revs suddenly shoot up the the scooter takes off like it's struck a major power band by then I've caught up to the truck in front so have to close the throttle down a bit and wait for a gap to go back to the fast lane. When I get a gap and open the throttle again to cross over, no action again. Same old story. Saturday I did about 400km with this problem and by then was pretty upset with it so I took it back to the dealer and told him to pull his finger out and fix my scooter or else. Then he says he will order a new carb and fit it, so what happened when he told me they checked the carb and it was fine. He says the mechanic told him he checked it but has now admitted he never did. So now I wait again and see what they come up with. Regards from Durban RSA.

I love the paint job.  Someone really did some nice work.  How much of a pain was it getting all the plastic off?

Hi Winginman, Getting the plastic off was not too difficult at all. The scoot was this blue I just felt that the two side panels that were goldish silver colour the same as the drive cover and silencer heat cover needed to be blue as well, so at the same time I decided to do that plastic cover bracket on the screen and the two brake filler lids. The spraying was a bit of a story because its a candy paint so me paintshop had to trace the correct base coat and the correct candy blue. So its a coat of plastic primer then a coat of silver base then a coat of blue clear then a clear coat over that, so its quiet a process. I started by taking off the two back pegs, watch out for that little spring loaded bearing that clicks into the dimple when in the correct position, one shot out and went bouncing into the distance, then took out the two bolts holding the side covers and clipped them out. The brake covers I took off and carefully took out the seals inside and kept them in a clean jar with the lid screwed on, then I wrapped the fillers with plastic wrap and put elastic bands around to keep them air tight and keep dust out. The plastic cover bracket on the screen is not what actually holds the screen in place, I was surplised to see that but it's just a cover to hide the screen mountings.
I have finally got the scooter back from the dealer Saturday after it was with them for the whole week. They say the problem was with the clutch/drive system which they explain would not further open or slide when the revs increased but was sticking mostly allowing the revs to increase but not transfer the power to the drive. he says when he first tested the scoot the revs were far too high when he reached 120km/h almost redline. They did almost 100km on it during testing and never even added any fuel. Now I have worked on car and bike engines but never seen inside a scooter so I don't know how the automatic scooter works but I will start researching it and find out for myself. Anyway they say they replaced both pulleys, the belt and the entire clutch assembly. Now the scoot is going like I expected it to go in the first place so it seems the problem is sorted and I'm very pleased about that, so much so I never even complained about the fuel. I will watch it and see how it goes, hoping I'll get a better distance on a tank now, I was getting about 15km per litre (expected 180km on 12litres)and it meant filling up every second day because I commute 68km per day (3 trips = 204km). I was too scared to try the third day on a tank for fear of getting stuck in traffic and running out of fuel. I have a fuel station 1km from my home and then none close by the rest of my route. Regards for Durban RSA.

Your scoot should get better mileage now, at least if you don't push it all the time.
My average is nearly exactly at 20km/litre, 15km/litre is typical for short winter trips.

Glad to hear they found the problem.  I am getting around 20 km per liter (50 MPG) in mixed city/road driving.  I noticed as the scooter breaks in the RPM drops off more at cruising speed.  Seems like the variator is breaking in.  I still have the stock rollers in the variator and it seems to have plenty of power.  I have 2800 miles (4500 km) on mine now and it gets better the more I ride it.  I don't get to ride as much as I like because work gets in the way, so sometimes I only get to ride to work and back.  Try to make up for it on the weekend but the weekends aren't long enough. :(
