60K Miles on a Scooter!
« on: October 19, 2013, 01:19:38 AM »
This is a pretty scooter. The owner of this SYM HD 125 has  recently turned 60,000 miles on his scoot - with no major repairs (no top end work)
I am impressed that a scooter can do this!

If I use my scoot everyday from the moment I bought it, I can achieve that in around five years

Sym makes one fine scooter. I love the HD200! At $3499.00 it's a solid choice in the 200cc class. In some ways I think they are built better then some Chinese-made Kymco's myself.

I like that the fuel fill is not under the seat.

But have heard some worrisome things about parts and service from SYM.
Still, this is my favorite big wheeled scoot - now that Kymco makes only the $5300 big wheeled People.

This is impressive. This proves the Taiwanese bikes are better built than those Chinese bikes which I stay away from at all costs.

It proves nothing, other than one guy managed to milk 60K out of his HD200. He probably got one that was built the day the Mormons took over the plant (not drunk or hungover, as their Taiwanese counterparts would have been).  :)

Remember, the plural of anecdote is not data. I had a Kymco P250 go through three head gaskets in under 26,000 miles. Is that typical?  Lard, for all your sakes, I hope not.

18,570 miles on the Honda PCX 125 now, after almost 14 months. Only a rear tire replaced, so far, and standard oil changes. I have a new air filter, rollers and drive belt right here, though.

The PCX is a very well built bike, you should expect many miles to come. Just make sure to maintain it like its a fine piece of Japanese machinery and it will live forever.

My wifes first scooter was a beautiful blue HD 125 Sym and we both liked it could hit 65 on the highway for short bursts and was wonderful to ride smooth and just plain fun we sold it to her uncle and used the money to buy her GV I am hoping that someday he will sell it back to us it doesn't get ridden much and it really was a great scoot.  Jim.

Isn't that crazy.. 65MPH on a 125 scoot!....and well made and fun to ride and easy to own. We are lucky to have such scoots avail to us (well, used now, still...)
You know, this couple has a pair of these SYM's , too. Lots of miles on the 2nd scoot as well, with no major mechanical issues.
I'm no scooter expert -but it seems to me that SYM and KYMCO can join the Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki group of pretty well made scooters. Kymco maybe being the bargain brand of the group.
Price being the same - I'd have to go with my great experience with Honda 2 wheelers. (3 fine bikes in the 60's and 70's)
The issue still seems to be parts and sometimes service on SYM's
But I do enjoy my little Kymco.

Kymco and Sym both have been commissioned by Honda and other major producers in the past and I believe currently.
