that little Y section you tooki off, put a little lube on the rubber to make it easyer to take off next time, they break off very easy,

What is the trick to removing the front cover?  I tried, but was unable to figure it out.  The manual wasn't much help.  The downtown is much harder to remove the body panels than either of my Yamahas.

Having just done this I found the most help here: it's not in English, but visually it's quite helpful, although some of the shots are quite dark!

From memory you have to remove the windscreen, the coverings under the footrests/ running boards, as well as a bunch of screws, and as mentioned above, under the windscreen, between the headlights there's a Y shaped piece of black (on my black and white one it's black) about 20cm/10" long that you have to carefully pull out horizontally. Under here are a couple of nuts that help release the front fairing. I'll try to attach a couple of photos later on to help, I was installing a thermometer on the handle bars.

Good luck !

Just watched that you tube video and that seems like a lot of work to get to the front headlights to change a bulb. I've never had to change one yet and I didn't think it was so involved. My Yamaha BWS125 was easy to do.

I see no reason to remove the lower side panels.

Thanks for the photos mjrii87. That's a really big help as I have not removed the front panels yet.

Great job. Thanks again.

I'm installing heated grips on the DT and the dealer tells me I have to remove the front fairing.  Are those all the steps required to remove the faring or are there others?  Please advise.
