Good to hear you are okay, Vivo. That was crazy. I could not imagine having to go through that. The amount of destruction in a matter of a short period of time is mind boggling. The Pilipinos are a tough people. They will rebuild and move on.

The devastation is just unbelievable...can't even get my mind around how immense that storm was. Just happy that Vivo came through it safely!

We too expect a storm surge for thursday.
Not as powerful as tropical typhoons in warm oceans, but with our shoreline like a funnel the sea is expected to rise 5.7m
And if the water floods over the embankment, it's not much fun swimming (actual 7°C).

Peak water was 6.1m above normal (that's very high, but embankments withstand). Wind peak "only" 176kph, minor material damage.
The only known casualty: a 82yr old woman died, after a wind gust pushed her car from the road in front of a tree.
The storm brought cold humid weather. 48cm new snowdepth on the mountain "Brocken".

Great relief here.
Much of our land is below sea level. Every high tide would cause flooding and devastating acres and meadows with salt, if there where no embankment.
Shore protection is a tradition (esp. in the Netherlands!) for more than 1000 years. Germany invests more than 100 millionen euro - per year - into dyke, automatic dyke openings and pumping stations etc.
We think it's to late to prepare, if a storm surge will land in 2 days. And afterwards it's to late to wait for US help.
Other nations (like Bangladesh, India) have a different approach. They prefer reaction over preparation.

I know exactly what you mean... Same in our country... Politicians steal money intended for disaster preparations...
