New Paint?
« on: February 24, 2014, 08:30:32 PM »
Has anyone re-painted? I have only 2 small side panesl and a front fender that are colored green (stock) . The rest of my Super 8 is Black. I want to make it all black. I was thinking of taping and spraying rather than disassembling body parts. I intend to use Scotch Auto Body tape and Krylon Fusion for plastic, vinyl and fiberglass as it is a primer and paint-in-one?
Any thoughts?

My Dh tried to pain onto plastic and had a lot of problems.  Krylon was not the best choice for plastic.

He ended up getting an autobody shop to do the painting for a reasonable fee and great results.
Taking in the separate pieces reduces the total cost and paying in cash may get a discount also.

I know VIVO you are probably correct....isn't it funny?

When we get lost and our friends say "Where are we?" We frequently respond by saying "I was trying a new SHORTCUT!" LOL :-[

Also: Your comment on the S8 forum about rear lights. OMG. I never thought about that. My scoot is 4 years old. Lamps are all still working.

Now I'm jinxed!!!!!!!!!! LMAO

Check out "dipyourcar.com".  Just did my White GV rocker panel in black.  Check the website and there's a forum too....

I just had my panels painted, so did a lot of research on this.

I found some great posts after google searches where people used rattle cans to get near-professional results, but it was a huge time investment (and for me money investment since I did not have the supplies or tools). There was multiple stages of cleaning, sanding, wet sanding, buffing with buffer tool, etc. I once painted a guitar without the sanding and buffing steps and although I was very careful and used expensive paint and clear coat, it very much looked like a rattle can job -bumpy texture and unprofessional.  Given the time and money investment, I went with a professional body shop this time.

I found I could get better quotes after I took the panels off, cleaned them up a bit and brought them to the shops in a bin. This way they can see how little there actually was to paint.

Quotes I got for pieces for an Agility (front fender, two fairings, and front panel surrounding headlight) were:
$500 - respected body shop
$350 - bodyshop
$275 -Maaco
$350 - another respected body shop

I went with the last quote and one week later, they were done and looked great. Totally worth it for me.

If you have not painted yet you might try PlastiDip.  If you don't like the black you can peel it off.
Youtube has some videos on it.  Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes carry it.

Just wondering - how much were the panels in black if ordered from a KYMCO parts house?
Or did they not offer them in black?

I paint boats for a living, and there is almost 400.00 in materials alone in this bike. Forget about the labor...

I think I know the answer but to be sure ... What's the question? Is it worth it???
Depends... If you take pride in what you do then any amount of $$$ is well spent. Would I do it again???
Hell yeah.
That scoot has been Green/White/Burgundy/Black/Black, and Orange/Turquoise, and black. All in about 5-6 years. If you add up all the paint alone it is well over 1,500.00. I imagine to date I have 7-8k total in the bike.
That's why it's for sale. It's like a call girl that never leaves...

My bad... Can you just buy the panels in black... No. They come in factory primer. I have bought 2 different sets of plastics from Stadium Yamaha for two different bikes, and they were both in a flat green primer.

Any painting done on these should also be done in Urethane at the very least due to fuel/oil. Rattle can enamels will react with petrol chemicals, and turn to crap in short order. Imron , Nason , Awl Grip are the paints I use most. They are all 2 part urethane based, fuel proof, and shine for years w/ no waxing or clear coating. You can buy these in quart containers for much less $$$, and use these to apply it... Preval 9 oz. Complete Spray Gun-267 at The Home Depot
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Preval-9-oz-Complete-Spray-Gun-267/202533738

Practice first, and let the paint flow out to a mirror finish. Letting parts cure in the shade is the BEST option.
