DT200 belt life.
« on: February 28, 2014, 03:12:52 AM »
According to the owner's manual, it says to INSPECT at every service interval of 5000km.

The service manual says to replace the belt at 20,000km.

In between, how is a good way to judge the condition of the belt, should it not last the 20,000 recommendation?

I have had the belt of my small 150cc snap twice, both at around 6,000kms. I do not particularly want to re-experience that of a maxi-scoot.

Hi there ,the service manual recommends you to check the belt because of different driving styles and conditions ,it is a good practice to check the state of the drive belt each time you change engine oil ,ie 5000km ,and any suspicious looking belt ie cracks ,loose fibers, uneven wear should be detected .Normally with normal daily commuting the belt should at least last 20,000  to 25,000 km but as i said earlier it depends upon each individuals driving style. It is a very bad experience to break a belt in the middle of a highway ! :-[

Which wears a belt out more?

Start-Stop traffic or highways?

Aggressive take-off and prolonged top end speed can shorten belt life ,so if you use your scooter as such, you should definitely check your belt regularly.

You change the engine oil every 5000km? (is your scooter a 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder?)

Yes, I change the oil every 4000-5000kms. Together with the gear oil. And both I use full synthetics.

My big bike every 5000kms or 1 year, which ever comes first, but she's on semi-syn.

Hi Stig ,according to dt300i service manual, the very first oil change should be done  at 1000km ,then it should be done after 5000km or 6 month , whichever comes first. And no my scooter is not 1.8 liter  ,4 cylinder. 8)

I think I'll just do the belt replacement at 10000kms, which should be in about 2-3 months.

The belt can be quite pricey depending where you get it from. It's not difficult to open up the CVT cover and have a peek inside. My belt looked fine every time I've had a peek, so I am waiting until 20000 km from 15000 km. If you plan to do a long trip, then it wouldn't hurt to pack a backup belt.

Here's the proof .
I do not disbelieve you fellows re. the manual.......I just think it is cheap insurance to change the oil much more often than that in a scooter engine. Goodness, it must be very hard & require several quarts to change the oil in your big scoots.
Old school here -I change the oil in all my cars at 3000 miles.

I used to change the oil in my truck that often. That is , until my ( very trustworthy ) mechanic told me it was just a waste of money in a newer vehicle . Now, I do it twice a year ( for seasonal change ) . Probably still close though, because, as a 2004, it has only 55,000 miles on it

IMHO, I do not think a 5000km interval for an oil change especially for full synthetic oils to be a big number.

Oil doesn't get stressed from the constant high rev due to the CVT, they get stressed more from start-stop traffic.

If you measure the belt across the top section they use 1.5mm as the wear limit. Just for example a new belt is 27.6mm The wear limit is 26.1mm
