Still a dork after 7 months of riding.
« on: April 06, 2014, 07:47:47 AM »
Yes folks, I'm going to admit, after having my scoot for about 7 months I'm still a newbie dork. I went to my first scooter group meetup today that was held at a local scooter dealer. Sadly, I could not get my scoot there because it was on the other side of the city. My Like doesn't do the freeway very well so I can't get it to Tempe where the ride was. Well, after checking out the dealers goods and getting to test ride a People i300, which was an amazing bike, I watched as the group headed out for a nice ride across town without me.
Of course, all I wanted to do was head home and head out on my scoot for a nice ride myself. Well, I got home, got my scoot out and suited up to go for a ride. I got on and turned the key, gripped the brake lever and hit the start button and.........nothing. Just the sound of the starter cranking like a champ but the scoot would not turn over. I could not figure out what was wrong. My bike only has a little over 1000 miles on it, and it's a Like. They just don't seem to break down.
Well, after way to many minutes trying to get my bike to start, I went inside and sat down thinking how very angery I was that my beloved scooter was sitting there dead out in my driveway.  After thinking about it for a while I thought I would jump on this forum and look up anything I could find on bikes not starting and low and behold there it was. My stupid kill switch was in the off position. THE STUPID KILL SWITCH!! I HATE THAT THING!!
Well, I don't believe I will EVER forget to check that thing for the rest of my life. And of course, thanks again to this forum for pointing out what the issue was. Even though it was something dumb like the kill switch.
       Ride safe everyone, mscmkr

After many years I still find I forget the kill switch OR kickstand. Do not feel bad.

As a longtime Figure Skater/Power Skater?Hockey Player/Coach?instructor... it looks even worse when you forget to take off your skate guards and step onto the ice ( in front of your students, especially ) !! It's like the old 'Banana Peel'  pratfall  :P

It always amazes me when I get taken out by the first step of anything. I did the same thing a week ago, mscmkr.

I did the same thing with my scooter. Finally remembered to turn the kill switch on....still wouldn't start! What the..?!? Oh yeah, I forgot that there is ANOTHER kill switch under the seat (a security device). After a few face palms, I had a great ride.

Hey Dork, this is Mr. Dork, we all make the same mistakes at times.

If it helps you I'm 51, been boating since I was 6, and there are times when I still leave a fender hanging over the side of the baot when undewrway only to look around and see it splashing like a mad dolphin. There are also times I leave the swim ladder in the down position and get underway, what can you do. I'll tell you what, you smail or laugh at yourself, be thankful it wasn't something worse and enjoy what's left of the day.

Life you said, now you'll ever forget that switch again, happy motoring!

Thanks everyone for the positive reinforcement. Nice to know I'm not the only one who is human sometimes. Lol! My poor little bike wanted to start. It even turned over a couple times then stopped. Guess they really make these things tough. They even want to run when there not supposed to. I really do think I bought the right brand of scooter. I love this thing more and more every time I ride it. Can't wait to get it up north this summer for some great mountain rides. I will take some pics and post them here for some good scooter porn for everyone.

Thanks again everyone and please ride safe, mscmkr

Isn't there a way of getting to where you wanted to go without hitting the interstate or highway system? Try looking at a map and trace a local route, there must be some way (IMO). I have an issue with my scoot, it hits 55 but I've got to go over bridges to go west of my house and they are all highways. I jump on and off as fast as I can and make sure I'm wearing reflective gear all the time. 55 MPH is quick if you fall but slow as hell on the highway.

There is a way to get pretty much anywhere in the valley via surface streets. However, I have a Like 200i and I have to factor in the horribly uncomfortable seat. The ride from my place to where the meetup was would take me probably 45 minutes to an hour without freeways. That's way to much for my poor ass to handle on that seat.
I just bought a trailer so I can start taking my bike anywhere I want to on that. I just didn't have enough time to build it and get it registered to get my bike to the meetup. I will be ready for the next one fo sho!
I did have a great ride on and off for most of the day today. I ran some errands and went to breakfast. I also just took off north of town for a while and rode around the area out there. Awsome ride and I had a great time. Have to do that more often.
It's Arizona bike week this past week so I'm seeing every type of bike all over the place right now. I keep getting looks at the stop lights by either Harley guys or there GF on the back of there bikes. I had a lady on the back of a big Harley look over at me and say, "that is so cute!" When she checked out my Like. It's not cute damn it! Its manly! Well, ok fine......it's cute.

We've all done that kill switch thing, don't feel bad. I've been riding bikes for over 45 years and did it not too long ago. At least you figured it out and didn't take it into the shop.  Would have really felt dumb then!

Is that scooter group you speak of Glen's group?  I join up with them occasionally - great bunch. Yeah, AZ Bike Week. My winter home is just a mile or so from the Westworld epicenter. Can hear the constant sound of V-twin rumbling from it through my bedroom window for over a week. Glad yesterday was the last day of it.

If it is Glen out of Phoenix, I have met him. He was at last year's 2013 Vegas Scooter Rally. He know's my group as well. Were the other scooter group that actually does rides rides unlike the other one that is more about drinking which is fine with me. We have a facebook page as well This being Nevada, we are the NSB. The other scooter group are a good bunch of folks. Nothing bad feelings about them at all. I believe he rides a red Vespa 200cc modern bike. It is not an old school scooter with gears on it. It is just a twist and go bike. He is a good guy.

I have done the same thing too. I kept wondering why my bike would not until I realized the kill switch was on. It happens to all of us.

Yup, it's Glens group. I just joined and I will be trying to get out where they are to go on a few rides. I'm looking into getting my own club together in my end of town. I live in north west Phoenix and they are all the way over in Gilbert. A very long drive and or ride for me. I would like to have a group of scooter folks close to me so I can go out and ride maybe a couple times a month.
