How to check condition of the belt?
« on: April 11, 2014, 03:00:58 AM »
Hello,

After opening up the belt covers, how do one inspect the belt of it's condition?

Do I need to remove it and flex it backwards to check for micro cracks?

Visual inspection and there is a service limit for the maximum width of the belt. For example on the Like 50 a new belt is 18mm wide and the service limit is 16.5mm wide

There are two things to consider... wear and tear that you can see and those you can't see

I only do a periodic check for abnormal wear and tear and cleaning... then I change every 15,000 kilometers regardless of the condition... you can never know when it'll just snap...

I was told if you ride aggressively and/or run top speed consistently, the belt will wear faster. On my daily 40km round trip, about 30km is top speed WOT and about 80% of acceleration is WOT. Would a 10000km belt change or 15000km belt change be more reasonable.

FYI, I am on a DownTown 200.

And, is the belt for the DownTown 300 and 200 identical?

our manual does not tell what the sizes are, my 300i belt measures 1004 mm. / 24 mm. and once I found a measure from mitsuboshi and it was 1004/25.2 mm.with 30 degree pitch  my first belt that came in the scooter was 1010 mm. / 24 mm. the next two belt I bought was 1004 /24  mm.  to measure your belt get the wifes tailor tape (cloth tape)  and measue around the belt,  cross checki the tape with a steel tape, because cloth tapes strech

I guess the best way then is to open up the cover and have a look at what is printed on the belt.

I think I'll just pop into the dealers and take a pic of a new belt. Yes, I'm lazy. =)
