Looking for an aftermarket rear shock
« on: April 18, 2014, 06:25:53 AM »
Does anyone know what size shock I can get to replace my old stock one? I've seen some pretty cool looking aftermarket shocks for scooters but not sure if they would be a direct fit. Is there a length in mm I should be looking for? Thanks for any and all help.

What bike do you have? Agility 125?  340mm The same as most small Kymcos
The shocks are all measured from the mounting holes @ center to center. Diameter is also important. You have to be sure the tire you have is the tire you want to keep running because if you decide to use a wider tire it may not fir next to your new shock.

I use a DNM MST-AR1 on my Agility. You can see it in here: at 2:20 mark

I'd highly recommend it :)

Yes a 125, I wasn't even aware you could run a wider tire. What's the biggest people put on? That's also my next mod.

I remember watching your video a while back. Great vid, great scoot. I may have to get that one you have.

Nice Vid Sir! Kudos for taking the time to make it.

I've put Pirelli Diabalo's on for different scoots, and recommend them to anyone. I do not know what size the 125 takes so you are on your own there. What I can tell you is stepping up on the rear only (as zg7 can tell you) changes the geometry, and the steering characteristics. You will find you need to do more leaning or use body English to steer instead of turning the bars. This is a GOOD thing to a point. I think Zg7's bike is right at the limit of geometry change. But if you are comfortable w/ it so be it.

The other thing about larger tires is you will have to install the tire/rim with NO air in the tire, and the brake shoes fully backed off to get the assembly back on the bike. It's a shouting match for sure but thankfully the bike don't talk back.

I also saw the listed shock length in the Vid as 342.5mm That is all good. 340/343 are the most common for these type bikes, and you could easily go a few mm either way. Crazy high, and the bike wants to put you over the bars unless you use body English. Crazy low, and the front tire tends to skid out in turns no matter how you ride.

This is the part where I make a prediction...  10,000 more questions! ;D

Thanks for the explanation zombie :) I'd like to add a few things. Like i said the shock is DNM-MST AR1 and it has 360mm eye to eye length. If you try to put a longer shock than this, the front end of the motor (cap that sits on top of valve area) will hit the middle fairing. You may work around this by removing that fairing completely or modifying it, but i wouldn't recommend doing that. Think of it like that the 360mm is the absolute max you can get. Increasing eye-to-eye length will make the headtube steeper. This will make handling more responsive but will also make you lose stability at speeds. An 18mm difference on back obviously won't be THAT noticeable but it's still there.

Would i recommend this shock for someone who's looking for an aftermarket replacement? Most definitely. Would i normally recommend an Agility user to change their rear shock? Not really. Like i mentioned in the video, these aftermarket shocks won't make your ride more comfortable or something in that regard. I was riding my Agility more aggressive than usual and i NEEDED oil damping at rear. The stock shock doesn't have that and it makes the shock extend very fast. This causes some stability issues especially on corner exits and lane splitting etc. Like i said, these are for performance riding.

There are also better shocks than AR1 in DNM product line. They have shocks with compression damping with piggybacks. Those may not fit to Agility though. The upper shock connection on Agility is not exposed (like in Yamaha BWS for example) and it's inside the fairings area and there are some rails around it so the piggyback of those higher end models may interfere with those.

Lastly which i forgot to mention, if you happen to buy the AR1, you WILL have to sand the lower part of the shock a few mm, else it will NOT fit to the Agility. Maybe they changed this with their newer models but i had to do this on mine. I've been riding like this for like 1.5 years now with no problems though so it's not a big deal. Still, it won't fit Agility out of the box. Just a reminder.

Happy riding to you all :)
