Bought son a new 2009 mongoose 70cc, top speeds? Rev limiters?
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:59:29 PM »
Hi, also new here!   ;D

So got my son a new mongoose 70 and i was hoping to get some more top end out of it.  I rode my 400 along side of him and it looks like hes topping out about 8mph.  i backed the rev limiter screw for the thumb throttle all the way and barely made an improvement.  I spoke with the dealer and they said theres another rev limiter in the transmission and they can remove it, of course for a fee.

I am disappointed that out of the box the top end is so slow.  Almost to the point that I feel something may be wrong with it.

I did read that there may be a green wire I can cut that may control the top end speeds also but not sure I want to do that.

Guess im looking for the communities opions on what I should be getting for top end for my 100lb son on a wide opne trail and what my options may be for increasing the speed more and making the ride much more enjoyable.

thanks in advance!
Tj

The top speed makes sense, there is a lot of machine built around a TINY engine! Inside the trans cover, behind the variator there is a large spacer that prevents the variator pulley from completely opening. this "spacer" can easily be removed w/ basic tools ( an impact driver helps alot) and basic mech. skills. The dealer should charge you no more than an hour labor for this job, however most dealers are willing to do this for no fee due to the quick nature of this mod., and of course the good will that is generated from such a selfless act. You will have to purchase an unrestricted cdi for your engine as the wire mod does not apply to yours. Scooter assasins is the only place I know to get one, and they are rebuilding their web site as we speak. As far as I know the 70cc mongoose was designed to be a TRUE entry level quad. Perhaps your son is just a little too advanced for this model?

thx for the reply.

well my son is 11 YO and i wanted him to ride on state trails so couldnt even get a 90 cc.  this is really his first atv and we are just starting t go riding.  the trail closest to me is just a pretty strait trail where more top speed it needed more then anything to really enjoy it.  i just find the 8mph is just to slow to enjoy cruising down the trail.  i follow or ride in front and 8mph does seem to take so enjoyment out of it.  after some time we will start to get into some more advanced trail rides with some mud, hills, etc.  myself, this is the first time ive ridden an atv in quite a # of years.  lol.

yeah, since the machine is under warranty and i dont feel comfortable with doing it myself, im taking it to the dealer for the spacer in the tranny.  from my research on line this may almost double the top speed.  if i could get 15mph out of the 70cc i would be very happy.

I would say 12-15mph, Try to persuade your dealer into helping your son enjoy your pricey gift! After all they will enjoy a repeat customer in the near future, and everyone who looks at this forum would like to see a little franchise good will!

I want to do the same. After removing that spacer, are you saying I must change the CDI as well ???

Not really. The spacer is a speed limiter. That is what is slowing the machine down. The cdi is a Rev limiter to avoid blowing the engine from the increased rpm's of the speed limiter. Once you remove the spacer you may not need to replace the cdi unless you want 2-3more mph top end.

Thank you. I appreciate your help. I gave it to her yesterday, she loved it. She rode for nearly 2 hours. But I can see that it won't be long before I will need to do the mods.

If you just go in for a once over at the dealer... Most of them will do it at no charge. Most!
