Clutch slipping, squealing **SOLVED** Cheap Fix
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:07:30 AM »
A year ago, idiot that I was, I was practicing on the very tight circle that California DMV makes you navigate to pass your motorcycle license test.  I dare say it's impossible to do on a 500, at least it was for me, but before I figured that out I must have done about an hour's worth of circling intermittently applying the rear brake.  Of course, that heated up the clutch bell something fierce and the second I left the lot I heard some squealing and felt the belt slipping on takeoff. For a year I 've been disassembling the CVT, using Emory cloth to scuff the pads and the bell, only to have the squealing/ slipping disappear for 4-5 days at most.  I noticed the bell was bluish in tint, knew that was bad but didn't change the bell.  Well, sick of the squealing, I got my new clutch bell in today and it's a whole new bike!  Much faster, smoother on takeoff, no more juddering and thank God - no more Squealing.

I don't think it was the glazing so much as that I overheated it so bad that the metal broke down and the bell probably was out of round.  Regardless, if any of you have squealing, slipping issues, obviously 1) Clean your variator, check your rollers/ sliders. 2) Check that your belt is good and within wear spec. 3) Inspect your clutch pads and scuff the glaze off them making sure they are more than 1mm in thickness. Mine were 3.1mm. If yours are less than 1mm you need new pads and if all this doesn't help then inspect your bell. If it's blue or highly discolored go ahead and replace it. It's a $60 part and it will save you a ton of aggravation.

Pics of old and new bell attached.  I made a video of the whole CVT assembly reassembly that I will post later on You Tube as there aren't too many around showing the intricacies of that job on our scoots.  FWIW: 5,000 miles on my Dr. Pulley Sliders and they look brand new.  Sliders were the best $50 investment I ever made (besides the $60 for the bell)

Sorry that i will disappoint you but the problem with the new bell will not be solved permanently. The reason on the discolored bell is not solved just because you change it with a new one.
The new one will be bluish again if you continue to drive in the same way that you used to.
Kymco did not change the material of the bell till now for the xciting model or the downtown model. It is the same unfortunately. It will solve your problem for a period of time but it will come back.
The design of the transmission is but when we speak for temperature. The only solution   that works here in Greece for many Xciting 500 owners is to change the clutch pads with Ferodo that are softer and have more grip and with that ( if your bell is in a good condition ) make holes on it as some sport bells have. I personally have done this mod and now after 25000 klm i have no problems at all.
Previously like you i cleaned the pads and the bell , and my bell was never discolored like yours.

Friendly of course , nothing personal.

I have over 50,000 miles on my bike with the original clutch and bell. Never turned blue. It must be how u ride, or u have an after market clutch that isn't working to well and causing excessive heat? Don't take this the wrong way and think I am criticizing u, but something is not right? I live in Arizona and even with our heat my bell is fine? :-*

Read the post,. Sissy. I explained how I did it at DMV.  My bell was not blue before I did that.  After it was. That was before I modded the bike in any way.  I will say that it's best with these bikes to blip the throttled on take off and then back it off.  I use to ease on the throttle on takeoff. Won't be doing that anymore.

I had clutch squealing / shuddering problems with my 2012RI almost from the beginning.   The pads were getting impregnated with grease.  4 clutch assemblies I went through in 18k miles.  One time I even got a new driveshaft.

The dealership finally got authorization to rebuilt the clutch with better seals.  It's been almost 3000 miles and the problem has gone away.

Do you know which seals were replaced and what higher grade seals that they were replaced with? I almost want to remove the case and spray some break clean in there to clean it off and see if there is more grease that comes through to see if I have the same issue.

Snap!
I also burned my clutch bell blue at the vehicle license training centre. It actually siezed , but luckily I was able to dislodge it and drive the 5 miles home.
The bell was warped from that point on, which I recently replaced(the warp did not seem to effect the ride.) I never had squeeking though on either bell.

Team T. There is a short shaft the runs through/between the 2 pulley half's. This is where the torque drive is and is what is greased with a seal at both ends. It is a quick repair to replace the seals. I would get new seals and grease before you destroy your belt.

I am looking for an exploded view so I can see which seals they are and so I can order new parts.

I don't get on here much but to answer your question, I just don't really know which of the seals that they changed out.  I will add that about 2 months ago, the noise seems to be returning.  Since I didn't ride it all that much last year, for all I know their fix really didn't improve much.

You know with the exception of this clutch issue (and I believe I'll be on my 5th should it be changed out), it's been a great scoot.  My dealer is by far top notch and will do almost anything to resolve an issue.  That praise aside, I believe when I get ready to replace my scoot I will seek another brand.

Go to kymco parts usa, type in your model, year etc. Then look at pulley parts. This will show an exploded view picture. The seals are inside the clutch drive.  :-*
