REALLY!!??
« on: May 04, 2014, 03:31:29 PM »
So I'm 620 miles and decide to ride in to get my oil for the 600 mile oil change. OF COURSE, on the way in the scoot starts making a funny noise (after 100 miles on the new exhaust). I'm like WTF and pull over onto a side street and below is what I see. YEP! Another exhaust screw has came out. This is really starting to piss me off. DO I HAVE TO CHECK EVERY BOLT before I go on a ride? I know this is an easy fix but I'm more than a little concerned about just hopping onto my scoot and going for a carefree ride.

BTW, no oil, I turned around and went straight home. GGGRRRRRR!!!

So lets make this into a learning experience, Why is this screw in there? It seems to be some sort of vent for the exhaust.

I think I've read on another thread that it's an access port for inserting a sensor for diagnostic checks. Exhaust temps, hydro carbons and such.

Sucks to hear that something else has glitched on your ride so soon after getting it fixed.

The bright side--at least it's not a catastrophic issue this time.

I'd pot on a flat washer, and lock washer as well. Lock washer on the bolt head side.

Yep, follow Zoomie's advice and use lock washers, star washers or split washers --- because  even the Red will let go at 500F, and the Blue at much less. Our pipes gotta be too hot to let this stuff lock a nut or bolt. "Heat" is what you use to free a Loctite'd fastener!
You probably can't shake a nut off of a BMW scooter....or a sewing machine, but our scoots are rather less sophisticated pieces of machinery. I think this whole subject is why Vespa pulled out of the USA for so many years - stuff flies off the scoot and we Gringos are looking to sue the pizza off of somebody. FYI: Lowe's has a nice stainless hex head screw (and washers) to fit that hole - take one of the screws next to it to (if it is the same) come home with the correct one.
"Z" - When he stays in the shade - he makes pretty good sense.

Just wear a sombrero whenever you ride. You'll be fine!  ::)
