200 mile service.
« on: May 09, 2014, 12:25:58 PM »
For new 2T engines:

If there is no oil crankcase change needed on the 2T, unlike a 4t where you can flush the machining chips out with an oil change, where do the machining chips go then on a 2T? Do these chips need flushing somehow?

Corrected : I see on page 39 of the manual there are provisions for an oil change on the Super 8 2T. I thought I read someplace there wasn't. So I believe the above question is now a mute point.

Also, I want to ask if there is any valve adjustment or check to be made at the 200 mile service on a 2T. My assumption is the owners manual is generic for both 4t and 2t as it does suggest I do a valve clearance check. That job is done by the reed valve on a 2t.

Do you need to use a new sealing washer for the gear case drain bolt and if so where can I get one ?

Anything other special item I should be looking for on the 200 mile service that can throw one a curve ball.

Thanks

Personally I didn't know 2 cycles had an oil reservoir either except for the 2 cycle oil injection tank.  Other than ordering the drain plug copper or nylon drain plug washers,  you can usually get them at any auto parts store.  Then again the washer doesn't need changed every time.  Always a lot of talk about valve adjustment.  My son recently adjusted valves on our 06 Vino 125 with 17,000 miles.  My Xciting 250 is pushing 22,000 miles and I've never touched them.  Hope you're learning to do your own maintenance

I think your right on that oil reservoir, I have a generic 2t-2t maint guide. Its pouring right now so I cant confirm at this time.

Im seeing 2T's have no valves and use a reed valve so no valve adjustment is needed.

I consider my self mechanically inclined working on cars (engine/head swaps, brakes, front ends etc) but a scooter now is new territory so its learning as I go with service manuals and having to find in the manual where the 2T and 4T service differs.

There is a 2 stroke oil resavior under the seat that provides the lubrication to the engine. It needs to be refilled approx every 3rd tank of fuel. Buy QUALITY 2 stroke oil. Non of that Chainsaw type stuff.
Full synthetic or synthetic blends made for motorcycle engines are a good place to start.

The rear gear oil only needs changing maybe twice a year, and again Synthetic is best. I use Napa 75-90wt.

You'll get used to the 2t world fast enough

TY Zombie, I have a NAPA near by me.

Would you replace the gear oil for the 200 mile service as suggested or let it go for now.

Should I replace the stock spark plug.

My last 2 stroke was a Yamaha outboard dingy motor.https://www.dropbox.com/s/osg2hxeuq0ry08t/RAFT.JPG

If the owners manual suggests something at 200 miles, I'd do it.

Tighten every bolt/screw on the thing that you can find too. My bet is you find no less than a half dozen that will need a little snugging up.

I wouldn't worry about replacing the spark plug but you could check the gap and look at it's condition.

I would change the gear oil for the simple reason the jack shafts inside run one end in a bearing, and the other end in the cast aluminum housings. Ride it a few miles to get everything warm, and remove the bottom drain, and then the top vent. The easiest way to fill it is replace the bottom drain, and use a LARGE syringe (from any pharmacy) to measure, and fill thru the top vent screw.

Pull the Spark plug, and look into the end of it. It should be similar to a coffee color. Not black, and not white or light tan. If in doubt post up a Pict, and we can tell you what is going on.
It shouldn't need replacing by any means but I strongly suggest you buy another to keep as a spare. 2 T's foul plugs like leaves falling from trees.

Then like Kreps says... Check everything you can get a tool on. If you have any doubts Youtube is FULL of scooter related maintenance Vids, and someone here will always be happy to help.

If your scoot is a 2 stroke, there are no valves to adjust nor crankcase to drain. The final drive should be changed when serviced. Pull the plug and take a wire brush and clean it and then spray with a carb cleaner, let dry and then reinstall.

TY Its hard to imagine changing a gear shaft (final drive) though at just 200 miles.

I assume the machining chips that get flushed with an oil change on a 4 stroke just settle in the engine or get blown out of the exhaust on a 2 stroke.

I forgot to look at my oil screen at the 200 miles service. I took it out at the 600 mile service and didn't see a single piece of metal shaving or anything on it.

Is you engine crankcase upstream of your oil screen then ?

I'm not smart enough to know what you are talking about (yet I'm not embarrassed to admit it cause I'm here to learn as well as share).

Here's a pic from my service manual. There is a separate drain plug away from the screen plug. Like the drain plug would be about where the words "Oil Plug" is. Help me understand.

You are talking about opposite ends of the engine. In fact the engine is the engine, and the gear case is a gear case.

Forget engine oil. You have none. Gear oil will foul from powdered aluminum, and not chunks. If there were chips/chunks the bike COULD NOT roll.
