Something to prevent rusting of screws?
« on: May 16, 2014, 02:26:58 PM »
I lost the caps that go on the screws, see attached pic.

Is there anything I should spray on there to prevent those screws from rusting?  maybe some WD-40?

Another flimsy setup. I see those caps can easily be lost. Replace with stainless steel or use a hot glue gun to fill the cavity. Hot glue can easily be pried out when time comes to remove screws.

thanks for the reply,

but I don't have a hot glue gun, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative.  would wd-40 not be good enough.

1 month of riding, 450miles logged, I've lost 3 screws, 2 caps, and its leaking oil.  the struggle is real but damn I love this little scoot. lol

WD -40 applied now and then should help. Those caps aren't water tight to begin with as they are just cosmetic and I would recommend wd-40 even if you still have the caps on.

Try clear or black silicone caulk. Clean with a solvent before applying.

WD-40 is good for cleaning or dispersing water.
Not good as a rust preventive. I found that out the hard way.
Clear chalk is a good cheap way to go.

Best thing is to replace all the mounting hardware with Stainless nuts/bolts/washers whatever.
It will cost you 2-3.00 to swap a few each week.

It's one of the best spent improvements.

Forum member MASSCOOT recommended a product called Corrosion X to me. Find my post "Finally Done" dated April 17, 2013 in the GT300I column. I got a can and it seems to work well. The site is posted in a reply by MASSCOOT to my post.

You may find the same caps inside your top case . I did and replaced them. Throw a little Vaseline one the screws.

The plugs are only a couple bucks each. Now leaking oil, that should be your primary concern!!!!

thanks for the replies guys,

it stopped leaking oil since I've left the oil container under the seat half full.

I've been using a few drops of this bicycle chain lubricant to prevent any rust, lets see how it works out.
