How do you manage to mount your phone/GPS?
« on: June 04, 2014, 04:09:43 PM »
as title, anyone want to show their genius idea about how to "securely" mount a phone/GPS/tablet on downtown?

I'm constantly riding on rough roads at higher speed (70mph+) would like to know how to securely mount expensive smart phone on the bike because I don't wanna lose it ... yet  LOL

I haven't done it personally but plan to in the future but I hear really good things about "Ram Mount".  They should have something that will work for you.  Check them out.

Thanks Gatorballs,
The combination looks nice. One question, I saw there's a difference between hole size and wondering which size should we get?

For example:
RAM-B-272U: RAM Motorcycle Base with 9mm Hole and 1" Ball
RAM-B-252U: RAM 2.25" x 0.87" Motorcycle Base with 11mm Hole and 1" Ball

Anyone knows which size is for our downtown? searched but couldn't find the answer...
Thanks in advance!

BTW, as many of you may already know, GPSCity.com is one of the most reputable vendors and been trusted on ADVRider.com, they are offering competitive price and exclusive coupon code for ADVRiders, go check them out.

Good find, sklnzl
The installation steps are very nice, item looks ok, cheaper Korean version RAM mounts, would not risk my $600 phone with such a little difference...IMHO

Seems like DT is using 10mm hold for the rear view mirror.
The model RAM offers is either 9mm or 11mm...
which one should I get? 11?

Thanks for the links.  I've considered a mount myself but have been "iffy" about using one for the phone.   In case of accident I want access to it.

Has anyone connected a power source to there GPS/phone?

I am thinking of a lexan  cover over the handle bars to have a protected shield for the GPS.  and safe from fast fingers,.       I have the template in alum. so far now what temp. is the best to bend lexan  I am thinking to heat a steel bar in the oven and put the lexan on it to bend it, the lexan is 3 MM. thick    8 1/4 "thats the first bend,  second bend is 9 3/8 "wide,.  to hold it together ,I think plastic auto plugs will do, the ones with the center part locks it on,. and to release them you have to push from inside,. pictures to follow  don.

Just got my Ram mount on the bike last night and went out for a 60 miles ride plus 30 miles this morning on a windy freeway (tops 88-90mph@GPS speed) so far no loosen screw, everything holds up pretty well
total cost: less than $45

kfc.android - could you post a picture of what you ended up doing?  Plus do you know the part number on the Cover Base?  I checked the website and they had a couple different ones.

Thanks for any help.

@thndbrd13: sure I can do that. The part number for the base plate is: Model: RAM-B-346U
Actually I am selling that specific base plate because I just got the center bar (same as AMAC posted above) so I have no use for the base plate. Let me know if you are interested.
Photo will be up later today
