A hot tire only equals tow things... Under inflated (don't trust just one gauge) or over loaded. Your tire may not be sufficient for your weight.

Must lose some weight then, though the scooter would be able to handle a 155 lb person. Actually the wheel its self it quite warm not just the tire.

Got ya... Check the gear oil. It may just be hard braking but the only other reason for a hot rim is a hot gear case

Thanks

Could be both or either. I ride a 10 speed MB a lot and I too much of a habit of using the rear brake.

Well I just took the scooter for another 1 hr ride and stopping on the way didn't feel anything too hot on the tire. It wasn't until I parked the scooter did the tire start heating up a bit but not as hot as before as I was very light on the rear break.

The tire isn't too far away from the exhaust and the crank case also dissipates or xfers heat to the wheel. There is a lot of friction form the crankcase gears, to the variator to the clutch and its summer now.

Probably doesn't take too much breaking to build up heat on any drum break system. Also both rides today were hard rides that allowed me to finally stay with traffic and test the exhaust derestriction.

I wouldn't know how to check the gear oil as there is no fill level. I could drain it and refill it again and that might be a good idea as I'm finally at 700 miles on the odometer now; I was going to wait for 800 miles to do a second gear oil change.

 Time for a few beers.

Good for you.

I forgot it is a new bike. I would still check the gear oil.

Nice, he did you good on those welds it looks like. Addressing your heat issue, some heat is normal if its gets actually hot too the touch something is wrong. One more thing zombie forgot, make sure you're back brake isn't adjusted too tight. Spin the wheel on the center stand and it should spin fairly freely, with just slight resistance from the final drive. I think it's a good idea to change the gear oil a couple times before 1000km (your odometer is in kilometers btw). Good job on the derestriction!!!

Yeah I never thought the brake could actually work. (too tight).
Hate drum brakes.

Thanks Bettin and Zombie, I couldn't have done it without the input from you guys. Will change the gear oil again. I think we can put this to rest hopefully and ready up for the next mod a bit later. Hope others can also learn from my experience and you guys input that made it possible.

One more question.

The small CAT pipe also extends into the exhaust about 1/8 inch but more so on my original exhaust that is now in the basement. Should I grind down that 1/8 inch that is sticking into the main pipe or let it go?

I always just grind it flat. If your looking for a but nite performance without going to aftermarket parts, I sell old style Kymco carb setup which has a much larger venturi. Get 45-50 with that alone, Chinese jetted and ready to rock.

Bettin that sounds good. Lets say I bought that carb kit, would I need to do other mods.

My fear is the scooter is designed for 35 MPH and now going to 45-50 MPH, the suspension, tires, reeds, and drive belt would need to be upgraded also. Would other upgrades such as these be required once the scooter is modified to go 45-50 MPH?

Also, what is the price of the kit? I'm open to more mods but also hope to keep the scooter safe and not have it wear prematurely.

I may have to bite the bullet soon and get a Motorcycle endorsement for this scooter. They limit us to 2 BHP here in Connecticut and that may make a few 50CC TaoTao's illegal as I'm seeing 3 to 3.5 HP in their specs.

Where is your Outlaw spirit?

Ct is supposed to be FULL of free thinking Patriots.

Tire upgrades are one of the first things to do to any of these 50cc scooters. It's a peace of mind thing. There is nothing else you really have to do to upgrade the carb/intake. The bike is engineered to rum in that 40-45 MPH zone. They simply DE tune them for the US DOT laws (more like guidelines to us outlaw types).

Just cause it can do 50ish don't mean you have to drive it 50ish.

Hmm my outlaw spirit.

Well Im in a small town and people are now taking note even when stock, getting a few thumbs up as I drive down Main st.

It was a PIA the spend half a day in traffic court in New Haven a few years back for a nolly, just the thought of ending up back there makes me cringe.

But you convinced me to go for more speed but I was getting addicted anyway.

If you get locked up I have friends inside that will look out for you. Bring a few packs of smokes. or maybe a cell phone.

PS... Tell them you're a bank robber. They don't like scooter trash in the joint.
