Downtown 300i Coolant flush
« on: June 23, 2014, 07:17:16 PM »
Hey guys,

Just want to check if there's any tip that I can apply to my next coolant flush.
After reading some posts on internet, here's my step:

1. Wait until engine is cool
2. release coolant by unscrewing the drain plug
3. locate the secondary coolant reservoir and drain it.
4. put the drain plug back in
5. fill appropriate amount of coolant based on service manual
    Radiator: 766 cc
    Hose: 169 cc
    Reserve Tank: 590 cc
    Total capacity: 1719 cc

!!! I got a question about this step. To fill coolant, will I need to fill the main (atop) and secondary (close to left foot rest) tank?

6. Put everything back in, test ride.

If there anything I should be aware of? Can someone share their experience about coolant flush?
Any comment will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

thanks a lot, de dee!
so are those steps I listed looks about right? I will use distilled water to flash thru the system, and  flush again with the coolant, then fill up.
Do you just fill up from the top (main tank) or you have to fill up both main tank and reserve tank?
Thanks :)

So I finished my first coolant flush, I guess...
Tested with a 150miles two up highway/city combined trip @85°F so far so good.

Here is my steps, correct me if I did anything wrong.

Drain the reserve tank first, and then the drain plug, easy.
Flush and clean the reserve tank, put it aside.
Next, fill distilled water from top, until clear water come out from drain.
Top off with distilled water, start engine and let it run for a while, drain again.
Put reserve tank back, fill up coolant (590cc)

Fill radiator, it was full after I put about 500cc, which is way less than the specified capacity from manual.
Decided to close the cap, start engine and let it run until fan kicks in
turn engine off when fan stops, wait for 5 mins, check coolant level, top off if the level decrease.
Repeat the step above until coolant doesn't decrease any more, finish.

Any thoughts or suggestion? It took me about 2 hours but it was fun.
