I need advice
« on: July 01, 2014, 10:50:41 PM »
Ok I installed my cone air filter tecnigas q-tre exaust and the largest jet 102. After the gas flowed started right up I adjusted air screw (it is about 3/4 to 1 turn counter clockwise) test rode felt great. Installed new plug rode scoot around block removed plug I think there was a brown ring. Rode scoot to gas station about 2 miles each way. On the way back stopped installed another plug. Rode full throttle about 1 mile removed plug for later inspection. When I got home about an hour later looked at plug no ring. I feel that the scooter is running great so far 45 gps verified great low end. So now for the advice for one I feed it may be lean because it running so good. Two I guess I am nervous because it went so good after reading the tuning difficulties with stock carb on the forum.  Do you all feel it is fine and safe to ride or should I get a few more larger jets. I thaught that 102 would have been to large. Also I would like to thank everyone who helped me up to this point.

Take a look at the other posts. There is a whole bunch of information on jet size. I have been reading all of them and learned tons. Been reading some posts 2 times or more. I am a newbie but you sound like you're doing OK. Better rich than lean.

Keep going richer w/ the main. It sounds like you also need to go one jet richer on the pilot because the fuel mix screw needs to be at or around two turns out. It's easier to tune down from rich than it is to rebuild from lean. Increasing the pilot will also have an effect on the main so you MIGHT be ok just upping the pilot but I like lots of jets around or a torch tip cleaner to open a few up if you run out of larger jets.

You HAVE to clearly see a dark ring at the base of the spark plug tip. You can keep testing w/ the white or lean plugs until it darkens.  Also listen for any "crackle" sounds inside the pipe. That is a lean death rattle. It sounds sort of like a pack of those "lady finger" firecrackers.

Tuning an open style air filter can kill a bike in seconds so trust your eyes, and ears.
