Should I try a stiffer Contra Spring

This is a real good description of how the variator works. It also explains why riders throw on a new performance variator and expect it to get more top end and it doesnt.

But given my mods as it stands (smooth boss, higher jet, exhaust), would it be sensible I just buy a stiffer contra spring for my stock variator and clutch to help on the hills, and if so, what one would be suggested ?

From previous posts I have seen that the yellow or red spring would work. I know that the yellow spring is 20% stiffer which would help you get higher revs/lower gear up hills.

Im also seeing that that you should change the spring around 1000 Miles. I should grab the next rated size yellow and give it a try.

I am going to order sliders and a yellow spring soon. I will post about all my deretrictions and performance in the next couple weeks.

The yellow is softer than OEM. It will open the pulleys too soon, and make hills worse. I ran one for about a year in my ZX so I know. The bike was about 5HP and I wanted low rpm on flat land. If it were hilly the bike would have self destructed from too much loading.

Read Chris's other thread. I answered the same question 3-4 times in 6-7 languages including jibberish.
Malossi Purple or Red 7-8 gram Dr. Pulley sliders or 5.5-6.5 Ninja sliders or rollers.

I run 3.5 Polini rollers, and a Malossi red w/ a torsion controller in a 13HP 2t, and the combo I linked above is perfect for 3-7HP bikes. 2t or 4t.
