honest answer - top speed
« on: October 01, 2009, 09:22:55 PM »
OK, recently bought a people 250 (not the S) and I have maybe a dumb question.  The scooter only gets up to about 50 miles per hour on a level road... the complicating factor here is that i weigh about 240.  Is it just that my weight is keeping the top speed that low, or should that not be the case.  I want to rule out "heavy rider" before I start looking into mechanical reasons why the top speed is so low.

So how 'bout it, any guys my weight or above riding in the 60s or 70s?  Or is this just the way it is?

way low - something wrong!!  my ps250 goes well over 70 with my 240 lbs attached - 70 is as fast as I have gone on it, but there is throttle left - I am guessing 80 to 85 maybe??  Did the previous owner keep up on maintenance?  Hopefully you can get some suggestions here as to the cause of this slowness.  I am sorry but I don't have an answer for you.  This board has as much p250 and ps250 as I can find, but you may want to post on some general scooter boards as well - we don't get a lot of participation here - I am hoping that changes!!

I would make sure the tires are properly inflated , the brakes ane not over adjusted and the air filter is not fouled . Put fresh gas with 1 oz. per gal. of seafoam additive and a new NGK spark plug . Good luck .

50 mph?!?

My A125 does (indicated) 73 mph.

P250S does indicated 88-90 mph with two up (total weight 400 lbs).

Everything on a flat road.

Subtract probably 10-12 % to get real GPS speed.

My 2007 P250 tops out around 83mph, indicated (probably 75, actual).

Hi Neon Mullet,
How used is your scooter? And do you know how hard it was ridden? Mine is a 2004 with tons of kilometers. I took my clutch off thinking it was too worn, but it was well within limits. I changed my weights out on the CVT down 2 grams. I got 80+ mph GPSed. But I weigh 160. Take Juice's advice, all those things are sound advice. Also I might add for you to check your CVT belt. It might be too worn and needs replacement. A nice Kevlar one!

While checking the belt, take a look at the rollers. May bee too far gone.

I've gone 85mph by myself (~240 pounds) on the Interstate with relatively level road and gusty side-winds. My GPS claims the speedometer is about 3mph over the actual so I've done about 82-83mph. But I felt like it had a little bit left and I wasn't at WOT.

Took it to a mechanic I trust and told him to change spark plug and inspect rollers/belt, turns out all 3 were correct.  Spark plug, rollers, and belt all need to be replaced.

Thanks for your help, everyone, you guys nailed it.
