Trying to not be an A hole.
« on: August 05, 2014, 05:41:45 PM »
Had a friend's roomate come up to me two days ago and say "Hey man that's a nice Vespa" then gives me a thumbs up and says " I like your Vespa".  Some people will always call scooters "moped" or "vespa". I wanted to correct him and tell him it was a Kymco People etc... but correcting him seemed like an A hole thing to do when he was complimenting it.

Yep happens every day. I don't bother to correct unless it's a more in depth conversation about the scoot.

Hope you're enjoying your new ride.

When I was pulled over by the police last month they called my bike a moped instead of a scooter. Let them believe what they want to believe about us. We are the Rodney Dangerfield of the motorcycle world. I do not care.

Bought my new plate for my Forza over the w/e.
The lady said in parting: "Be careful on you motorcycle."
I said, "It's a scooter."
She said, "OK, be careful on your little scooter."
I said," It's not a little scooter. It's a fire breathing 200 mile per hour monster Honda scooter in Ferrari red."
She said, "Oh."
I think I heard some giggling when I walked out of the DMV office.
Fortunately I can renew my plate on-line next year.

I have people call my Like everything from a moped to a Vespa. Their remarks are quick and in passing so I just let it go. The only time I tell them it's a Kymco is when the ask if my scooter is a Vespa?

OP I wouldn't worry about it either way. The main thing is that you enjoy it.

LAMO on this Stig.

That is sad that what she said to you. I bet she has never been on 2 wheels in general per se. Of course the public thinks we are slow and not actually do the speed the limit. We ride because it is fun and this hobby is inexpensive.

Motorcycle plate and mototcycle insurance. Seems like, atleast in Kansas, as far as the law is concerned it's a motorcycle. Under 50cc can be a licenses Moped or motorcycle depending on your tuning.

It's just that it gets annoying after a while. Let's make this the "good comeback thread".

I like Stig's retort but I just can't seem to think of those kinds of remarks on the fly.

Guys I ride just about 365 days a year. If I took the time to even acknowledge with more than a nod I'd never get thru the day.

After a while you will barely hear them, kinda like your spouse .... ;)

Here in Vermont it's the same way...motorcycle license, motorcycle tag, motorcycle insurance.  Legally, the state of Vermont considers it a motorcycle.  I was actually talking with my neighbors boyfriend the other day how has a very nice  Kawasaki Z800, and he came over and said "Nice motorcycle".  I said 'it's a scooter'.  His response was "With it's size, and with how I've seen you ride it, it's a motorcycle."  It was kind of nice to hear and to get some respect.

I was told something similar about my People. Basically i was told that as big as it is and how I ride it that it's a motorcycle. And was told scooters are small and economical. I get nearly 70 mpg... That isn economical?

Moped, Vespa, Crescent wrench, Piper Cub, Hell's Angel. Every adjustable open-end wrench is a Crescent, every small plane is a Piper Cub and in the '60's every one on a motorcycle was a Hell's Angel. Honda did the most to stop that Hell's Angel thing. The point is most ordinary people have a very limited scope of perception when it comes to stuff like this.....

You DO "meet the nicest people on a Honda". Look at me!
My 14 yr old daughter says that if I started using a little Just For Men - I'll be younger looking, too.
(but I'm thinking - there are darn few dark-haired guys riding a scooter above 50cc's - I'd just look like an imposter! It would be fun to go blue/black for one day - scare the snittzel out of everybody)
