Coil wiring ??
« on: September 18, 2014, 05:01:07 PM »
Hi

On the schematics you can see that the Ground of the coil go to the frame trought the comb switch

Its very strange because ther is no reason for that and some loss can occur with this wiring

Anyone know exactly if the ground wire really go trought the comb switch ??

I have putted the coil directly on the frame with a short wire

Nice day to all

What is the "Comb" switch?
Reality is, ground is ground in a functioning  system.

Hi

Sorry the Com switch is the ignition switch with the key

For sure ground is ground but the lenght of the wire has not to be so long, this can only make problems

On many bikes the coil id directly connected to the rgound

Ok... I get ya.
The reason they do this is to completely disconnect the coil when the key is turned off.
Many bikes have such "hot" ignition systems that if you are working on the bike, and by chance have to turn the flywheel, there is a chance the engine can fire.

Early outboards were notorious for this. If you turn the flywheel the engine would sometimes start, and rip your hands to pieces. CDI engines are MUCH more prone to instant starting as well.

It's simply a safety feature.

Hi

If the coil was wired as you say its true that its a safety feature

But here its not the case

The switch has four terminals and
IG coming from the pickup
E Ground to the frame
BAT1 +12v coming from the battery
BAT2 +12v after connection

When the key is on the ON position
BAT1 and BAT2 are cconnected so all the equipment are 12 v powered

When the key is on the  OFF position or on the LOCK position
IG and E are connected the motor stopping working because the pickup was grounded and not suitable for the CDI

The ground ot the coil is directly connected to the E terminal who is going directly to the ground of the frame so there is no effect on this on any position of the key

I have not the bike here to see if the schematic is true (its the bike of my  granchild) but if the schematic of kymco is true its very strange

Here is the schematic

Good week end to all

Yes sir. I do see what you are saying. It is odd to do all that extra wiring, and you do have a valid point.

If I were to do the wiring I would do exactly what you have done, and ground it as close as possible to the coil, since the CDI is grounded at the key.
The coil mounting bolt is a perfect point to do this.

They also do some wacky wiring for the starter relay, and the brake lever by supplying 12v pos. to the brake light/starter relay, and switching the shared ground thru the brake lever.

No telling why... Nice job researching it out.

If I were to do the wiring I would do exactly what you have done, and ground it as close as possible to the coil

Be sure to remove the paint of the frame before and its ok

I will do some work on the wiring to see if others mods are possible (the regulator is also too far the battery and the wiring will be as short as possible to avoid errors

Thanks for all
