(SOLVED, operator error) Six months of my LIKE. Bad timing
« on: September 23, 2014, 02:30:45 AM »
So, I was contemplating starting a topic about six months of owning my LIKE and how trouble free and fun the experience has been.
Yesterday, I was thinking of how I would write it.  I decided to go for a ride. 5 minutes into the ride, my scooter stalled out at a stop sign. I hit the start switch, it fired up for a few seconds and died. OH BOO HOO!!, or something like that.
I started it again and kept the throttle up and rode home. I gave it some stink eye and started riding again. It sounded like it was skipping a bit a low idle.
Fast forward to today. I started it, it ran for a few seconds then stumbled and died. I can only compare it to my old '66 Malibu when it would diesel until I adjusted the carb.
The worst part is the odd noise it makes right before the motor completely stops. I will check the obvious, bad gas, vacuum lines, tight valves, gremlins.
Otherwise, it is under warranty. Let the pros deal with it. Thank goodness I have a back up LIKE, since my wife won't ride any more.

We had some battery connections come loose,  and a major ground wire work loose causing running issues. Look on right side, at engine ,visible without removing anything. A golden 8 mm hex head screw securing ground wire.... screw fell out on one LIKE Leaving ground setting on engine case. Intermittently contacting.
One last, easy check guess... remove gas cap. Cap not breathing will cause gas flow issues I think. Mine quit venting....forming a vacuum in tank.
Keep us posted..   good luck.

I checked the basics; valves, ground wires, vacuum lines and electrical connections. I found nothing obvious.
I called the dealer and dropped off the bike yesterday. The service guy said that he would submit the warranty claim. He stated that it typically takes Kymco about 3 to 4 days to give them authorization to do the work or give them guidance.  That sounded odd to me, but I can believe anything, after reading all of the posts on this forum.

You really read ALL the posts here!!! Are you related to Sarah Palin?

Just messin'.

It's probably a small dealer w/ little experience w/ Kymco. If he is asking for help from them from the git go... Be happy.
Keep us posted, please.

They are blowing steam. You can only submit a warranty claim AFTER you know what is wrong. That is never the first step to fixing an issue, and from my experience Kymco always pays out warranty claims unless you're doing something stupid like trying to scam them. So they can't even diagnose an issue? They just immediately resort to crying to Kymco for help? Sure I'll call my guy there If as a last resort, but to start with that? No wonder people hate dealers LOL.

Problem solved. Apparently, these scooters are not idiot proof.
On Tuesday, the dealer called me and told me that my scooter was fixed. He said it was a simple problem. The spark plug was bad. My first reaction was that this was not possible, as I had just replaced it 500 miles ago.
My second thought was that I was a dump ash for not checking it in the first place. I know that when a scooter won't run, the second thing you check, after the kill switch, is the plug.
Why didn't I think to check it? I checked the plug wire and everything around it. I guess it was because I had already decided to take it in. I did not want to get caught up in some warranty hell.
Another thought, was that the issue was something else, and they just wanted to sell me a part. That happens all the time. I discounted this as purely my way of justifying my lack of follow through.
Whatever happened, it only cost me $50.00. Color me stupid for not checking the plug. Anyway, my scooter is home.

Plugs fail right out of the box. For the Avg. Joe who buys 2-3 a year the chances are low. I buy 1,500-2,000 a year,(marine/auto/motorcycle/scooter/chainsaws/weed wackers, ect.) and find about 7-8% to be faulty within a month.

Glad to hear you have it fixed. Sorry about the $50.00, and a few weeks tho.

I agree with zombie about the chance of plugs being bad. I bought several ngk plugs from my local Carquest, just to have on hand if I needed one. I changed mine after break in, on my Super8, and after only 800 miles the scoot wouldn't start.
I went through all the same stuff as Lido did....checking hoses and wire connections, and couldn't figure it out. Then I decided to change the plug, on a whim, and it fired right up. No problem since, and I have about 1400 miles on the current plug. But I still keep a couple on hand, just in case.

I looked around but can not find an image that shows what is REALLY inside a plug.
The attached image is as close as I can find. It shows a "resistor assembly". That resistor has a HAIR thin wire from the end cap to the resistor. If you drop a plug that wire can break or dislodge. The only reason they do not burn is due to the rapid fire nature, and not carrying continuous amperage/voltage.

The next time you watch a fella unload a UPS truck or delivery van... You will know how/why things fail.
