All Kymcos use DC based cdi ignition. The large box gives this away, big cdi=dc small cdi=ac.

But an orange aftermarket AC CDI will work on the S9. I ran one for a while

Not all Kymco scooters use a DC based ignition.  The air cooled Super 9 uses AC.  Liquid cooled uses DC.  Between the two, the  stator, flywheel and CDI are different amongst other things (Harness, ignition switch wires, etc)

The old LC Super 9 CDI is pretty good.  If it's working well with the rev-limit wire unplugged, I wouldn't bother changing it as you will likely see no real benefit.

So, with 2003 Super 9 LC, which you say is DC ignition, you have to have a charged battery to have spark?  I thought I could run it without a battery, but no spark.  Put in a fresh battery and it runs.  If I had know this, would have saved my a lot of trouble.

I rode my 2005 with a dead battery from the shop.  No signals,  but otherwise was fine.  Did you have any battery hooked up while trying?

When I originally got scooter, battery was dead.  I took out the battery, pulled the carb and cleaned it.  I put back in the carb and tried to start w/out the battery and no spark.  Later I got the battery I ordered, installed it, and had spark.  Now I don't think anything was really wrong with the scooter except dead battery, and clogged carb.

No worries, I learned a lot about my scooter, and like it more than ever.  I still haven't ridden it yet, I am still putting on the plastic, getting it all back together.  Maybe ride tomorrow, but weather is cold.
