Hi, long time member and reader but rare poster or commenter, had my scoot for about 4 years and any maintenance has been done by myself. Its got a freeflow filter, lighter weights, naraku variator kit and cut cdi.

I was recently riding home along a dual carriageway. There was a strange whining noise as the scoot cut out, started straight back up on the button then did the same thing about 30 yards on. Did this a couple of times and decided not to chance it so walked it home. When home I tried to crank it and it wouldn't turn.

Does anyone know what the problem may be, can't carry on with public transport any longer.

So why can't YOU perform some basic troubleshooting to determine if the issue is fuel, spark, or compression related?

I have searched for the issue but to no avail. Thought I would ask the people on here who seem more knowledgeable about these scooters for help.

Look at two things... Open the CVT, and see if your belt peeled off its cover, and wound up around the var or clutch. If so the the fix is obvious. If not pull off the belt, and see if you can turn the crank by hand.

If not check the oil level, If that's full then pull off the head, and inspect.

^^^^ What Zombie said, sounds to me like it ran dry (No oil). They make a horrible "squeel" when dying of no oil. And it would make sense, drive it home on no oil and it's seized up and won't crank now. Have you checked the oil yet?

The good news there is a new crank is under 40 bucks, and a cylinder kit is the same. A gasket set including a new oil pump/gear is under 20.00.

If the oil pump gear went then the cylinder kit, and gasket set are all you need.

Just in case the worst happened... You managed to do all the work up to here. Doing this "major surgery" is no more difficult. Yes you DO have to remove the engine, and the Rt. side case but it is on the same skill level as everything you have done already.

I've seen four or five oil pump gears shatter/shear off teeth. So even if there is oil, it may be the pump was not working. It's a four-five hour job the first time. after that it's about an hour- an hour, and a half. NO BIGGIE!

The belt seems fine, chucked a socket wrench on the variator nut and I can manually crank it.

Sounds like it will be a tear down and rebuild job.

Well hang on there bucky... If the engine turns does it "feel" smooth?
Do a compression test. 120PSI or better w/ a wide open throttle.

Do an oil change, and look for a metallic "sheen". Feel the oil for LOTS of fine grit. Look at your fingers, and see if they shine metallic.

Pull out the timing chain tensioner to see if the failed. Pull off the flywheel to see if it cut a harness.

Lots of maybes here..

It sounds like what happened to my scooter a peace of the piston came off and made my cyl wall a mess

It was harder to turn than I remember, the electric starter won't turn it. Will have a check of the oil when I get chance and now trying to procure a compression tester.

It was low on oil  :( I have changed it though.

How low? Like a few drops came out low? I've noticed when it does engine damage you can smell it in the oil.

If it's hard to turn I'll bet the oil pump gear went out.
