Roast Turkey Ride#
« on: December 12, 2014, 11:42:10 PM »
(#< what's that thing - nonkymco pre-alert, for those of a too delicate nature}
"22 , feels like 10" weather.com said as I headed out before sunrise.
I stayed OK for the first 75% of my 3.5 hr scooterin' adventure this morning. (really looking forward to heated gloves from Santa)

My screen had frost on it when I got to my coffee village this morning. True story.
6 layers, 4 heat packs.
2 balaclavas.
6 armored points.
To the fellow at the 1st coffee shop, surprised to see me: "Get close to me, you'll notice that I smell like a roast turkey. That's how many heat packs I'm wearing."
They had the banana, walnut and choc chip muffins for the silly people in my family - I bagged the manly "blueberry & twigs" muffin. (this whole village is a back to nature, "if-it-falls-in-the-batter-cook-it", bike riding, sandal wearing, indigo-blue haired enclave. My kinda place.)
I never have to remove any of my gear in town. One kid & I saluted each other today - he thought I was a Storm Trooper. I'm learning all the street people's names and earning some respect for showing up on days like this.

Frost on the horse farm...

Primo parking spot, for us 'regulars'....

Frost on cars and Stig....
Colder'n the Blue Fairies, but I had a blast on this scooter.

Are you SURE you're not on Parole?

Yes, you must get your wife to take pics of you in your winter gear. You've inspired me to ride farther into the cold months. Is there a post on what you are using that I missed?

Good to hear from you wkreps,
I just get such a kick out of my scooter riding that I barely use good sense when deciding what weather is scooterin' weather!
I use silk glove liners under heavy gauntlet gloves; T-shirt, long sleeved thermal under shirt; flannel shirt; t-neck fleece shirt; nylon wind breaker; Hi-Viz mesh armored jacket with the thin rain liner; Sliders armored jeans under FrogTogg rain pants; socks and heavy hi-top work boots. And a scarf!

Wish I could afford a heavy armored leather jacket - that mesh jacket requires a ton of layering beneath it. But have not seen an affordable Hi-Viz armored leather jacket.

Decades ago I rode my Honda bike through winters in Mass. by using a set of rubberized nylon rain pants and top over a sweater and dress shirt & slacks. Cannot find these now - and a fully rain proof set like that will also keep out ALL wind.

I have added a set of Gerbing 7 V battery heated glove liners which work great! My hands constantly limited my riding time to .75 hour on the very cold days.

When the main roads clear I will be commuting to work on my scooter again. If the main roads are safe (sometimes I have to walk my scoot through neighborhood streets for 3 or 4 blocks to get to the cleared mains) I ride to work, regardless of temps.

It IS a pain to get all this stuff on - oh yeah - I forgot the two balaclavas that I wear on the very cold days. A thin one that goes down on my chest and back - and a very thick one on top of that. You MUST keep your chin and neck well covered!

Slow down - stay on well known roads - you don't want any surprises to add to your stressed riding attention. You are stressed when it is very cold and you have so many layers on. Allow for it.

Have you tried Ebay.

I found one last summer for 40.00 at an auction that was expiring w/ "0" bidders.
It was listed as $249.00 "buy it now" Plus 29.00 shipping from You Know Where... China.

It's a bad ass jacket, and all the armor is removable. It also came w/ separate strap on elbow pads, and extra thicker armor for the back plates. Hi Viz orange patches through-out, and basic black body.

We have Ocean State Job Lots up here. I found a Neoprene Vest ,face cover, toe covers for little cost. Nice job breaking the chill from wind factors.

I have several armored jackets/pants. Found a waterproof,Winter armored jacket (considerably cheaper ) at the Military Supply Store .It isamazing what you can find at these places !

Found ATV armored Jacket?pants for winter riding, as well . Unfortunately they are Camo , so less visible.

I have three armored hoodies ( from GoGo Gear :      www.gogogearla.com/ ) . Two black...one larger than the other in order to allow for more layering underneath and the third is a Hi-Vis (that Arlene/owner is so kind as to be giving me as a Holiday gift due to my job dislocation ) for more visibility. Arlene was on Shark Tank a couple years ago (http://www.cnbc.com/id/101913920#.) I love these hoodies and may invest in the leggings , when I secure a new job.

Stay warm and ride more ! ( You certainly set an example for us , Stig...many happy rides and cups of TH !! )

We've heard you mention "GoGo Gear" before... That's a cool story (shark tank).

Now I understand why you back them so proudly. Nice!

I think Arlene is a true business person. She cares about others and is willing to listen to others ideas/input. She is on FB (under GoGo Gear) and responds, personally, to others comments, thoughts.

These are the Mom and Pop kind of businesses ( unlike large Corporations ) that I will support .

I only use FB to stay in touch with Family ( back in Michigan ) , Friends (out of State, as well ) , and educational info ( sites having to do with Emergency Medical Services, Beekeeping, Science/Technology,Health and so on. More like a Readers' Digest type of resources .

Other than that, I have more things blocked than allowed . Private Messaging is most used - other than Co-Administrating a Group (Scooters Unite ) with friend out of Michigan .

I avoided it for a long time, but- had to get in touch with an old/dear friend out of state ( I had lost all contact information ) .

Used it most over the pastmonth to keep up on info for/provide support to friends with a terminal family member and toarrange to see some of them while here from out of state .

I refuse to use it to post about what I am doing, feeling, or other B.S. that most people do .More like communicating here withselect persons .

I get ya!

I have an alias account that I used to keep track of "things", but I have never posted anything. It's just to have access to their network. It's funny tho... How they make it almost mandatory to use certain aspects of the "net". Imagine no Google!

I'd still be way more retarded.
