..starter blues..
« on: October 21, 2009, 08:25:12 PM »
..ok, so I replaced my battery, which would lose some juice over night, thinking that it might not have enough cc amps to fire everything up...I got that idea from..OldGuy or Urbestfriend's experience..in a way earlier post...

..Still, my electric starter drags, and will not turn fast enough to fire the engine...

..once warmed up very well, like if I were to stop at a convenience store, it will fire right up...

..starts on the first kick damn near every time, hot or cold..

..haven't look at my manual for any troubleshooting tips yet, so I thought I'd throw it out here for some discussion...

peace

There are only 3 parts to consider. The first would be the starter motor itself. You can amp test it off the scoot. Your local shop should have the specs. for that. The starter relay may be going south, and can be replaced w/ a Bosch,or Cole Hersey 30 amp relay for around 13 bucks, And finally the starter bendix inside the side case may need to be cleaned, and lubed. I would start w/ the last one first as it is a free fix. The relay will take a little rewiring to install, but it is fairly straight foward. The starter can be opened to inspect the brushes, which may be worn or stuck. A little graphite lube can help if they are getting stuck. If they are worn a good rebuild shop can get you new ones for around 7 bucks. I took my starter off about 2 years ago, and haven't missed it a bit...

Slinger- Mine does the same thing!  It has been getting progressively worse, to where I don't even try to use it anymore.  I had a guy at the battery store test the battery and he said it was good.  So, that leads me to believe that the starter motor is bad, he concurred as well.  I haven't really cared enough to really get into it further so let me know what you come up with.  My local shop wanted like $70 for a new starter motor, but my foot works just as well for now!  :)

...Well, i've checked out the bendix....cleaned it and it really seems ok...I guess i'm still under warranty, so imma call the shop about the starter motor..I was wondering about the brushes, because that's what it seems to me like it is...didn't know they could be replaced...that's way cool...

..I haven't really missed the thing so much either...but it's something that's not working, and if my warranty will cover it, I guess i need to get it done...runs out in December...lol..

Thanx guys!

If it's still under warranty, I'd get on that!  Post back with the results.  I'm curious if it is the starter motor for sure.

Your start up problem might also be with the electrical system.  Disconnect the battery and ohm-meter the leads for shorts and leaks in the system.   A good restart soon after a short run might be because the battery would have the advantage of a fresh surface charge.

..I bought a new battery, charged it overnight, installed it and even on the first try, the starter would not turn fast enough to fire the engine...

..do you think that would have been pretty much the same as what you mention above?

If the connections between the battery and the engine starting system are in good shape, then no.
