People 150 start issues

I have had a Kymco People 150 for 2.5 years now with pretty low use. I last used it 3 weeks ago and when I went out today I was unable to start it. The electronic start originally gave just a little bit of life but after two tries just started clicking instead. The blinkers and headlights work so the battery isn't completely dead.

I was also unable to kick start it but I am unsure if that is an issue with the bike or not as I've never successfully kick started this bike.

Any ideas? I have a warranty that says it covers the Emission Control System for 5 years or 12,000kms so that might help me, but if I can't even start it up to get to the dealer that's a problem in and of itself.

I would suggest changing your fuse.  It's that little glass vial under the seat. They're very cheap and at least you could rule that out. 

Since you've had the scoot, have you ever replaced the battery?  I have a trickle charger in my garage that really helps.  Wal-mart now carries scooter batteries. 

I can't kick start mine, either.  But then again, I'm wimpy.

The push on terminal on the starter 12v, is a flimsy set up. Check w/ a test tight to see if you get 12v on the starter when you push the button. Sometimes it just takes a little tweaking of the connector. Even if the relay clicks it dosen't mean it is working. That's why i suggest the test light. I believe the fuse is on the opposite side of that circut, and should not be an issue. As per the previous post, do check the charge on the battery. They aren't to good to begin with.

Ok, so I've checked the battery and it seems to be at full charge. I am going to try the fuse next, I am not really sure how to check the starter with the test light. I'll look a bit more into that one.

You can Inspect the 12v terminal on the starter, crimp the connector a little to tighten it up, and use a volt meter. Put the positive side on the starter 12v, and ground the other. Take a reading while cranking. It should not be below 10.5 volts, and 11-11.5 is best. If its low at the starter check the same way at the battery. Then check the output side of the relay. The trouble is in 1 of the 3 parts, and it will only take a few minutes to find.

In addition, I would "load test" the battery.  First, place it on charge to make sure it is fully charged.  With a 1amp/hour charger this will take approx. 5 to 8 hours depending on the current condition.  Next, with the help of a friend place a volt meter on the battery and hit the starter button and record the volts.  If its still just clicking the volts will be very low.  The clicking sound is most likely your starter selinoid; as there is not enough amps to turn the starter over.  Also, just because you have lights means very little as the amps required to start the scooter is far greater than what is required for lighting.
