Horn killed battery?
« on: February 01, 2015, 04:55:40 PM »
My horn recently stopped working on my 2005 LC s9. I tried to adjust it,   it would only click, but with no success.  So I swapped it with a spare I had lying around.  The wiring setup was different.  The original had only one wire running to it and grounded (?) at the mount.  The other has two points for wires to connect and wouldn't ground to the mount with out a jump wire from the second,  unused connector.
It worked like a charm,  but while out,  sitting in traffic,  the engine just stopped,  had no power.  The power would return when I cut the key off then back on.  It would run until I hit the turn signal, then immediate death.
Last time I had this problem was when I wired the led running lights improperly,  but since rewiring I have not had a problem.  Until the horn change... Just to keep it going to get home I disconnected the horn and led's.
Any advice,  short of just a handlebar mount air horn?

It's a dead battery issue.
Charge your batt, and start the bike you should see 14v or better w/ the bike running. If it is lower the rectifier or stator are shot. If it is higher the rectifier is shot.
The horn is most likely coincidence.

How old is the battery? It could just be the battery has boiled dry.

It's probably the battery.  Horn should have nothing to do with it.  I disconnected there extra lights and it's fine until I sit in traffic with the signals and brake lights on.  Then,  surprise! Dies when the light turns green 😡 I'm going to look into a decent battery instead of hitting up Walmart

Check your voltages... Killing out a new battery reduces it's life span.

Okay,  the battery (two actually) are old. And I mean old like one will hold charge but has no cranking amps,  the other will crank if it's not cold as hell.  My voltage when running to the battery is 14-15v on my Taotao,  same battery in my s9 is only reading 12.8v +/- at idle and rises with rpm.  I guess I need to find a new stator...

Hmm,  a wire from my multi meter  just fell out Of The tip.  After repairing it I was reading  13.8 at a touch above idle...

No. Your stator is doing exactly what it is made to do. It will only spin fast enough to charge around 2800 rpm.

The batt. w/ no cranking amps is toast. Toss it in a river or your neighbors pool. (that's the American way.)

Ha ha the river is close,  but the junkyard will give four bucks each.  So,  I can safely order a new battery.  The one in it Now actually has started fine today since its been above freezing for the past two days.  Still gonna get a new one and put this one in the tao.

I use these for about 10 bucks. Just swap the terminals for the push on spade type (the yellow heat shrink kind)
I've installed around 20 of them (15ish bikes) in the past 4-5 years, and they hold up JUST LIKE the standard 40 buck deals...

The dimensions are relatively the same?  The space is already very cramped...

The length, and width are the same as all of them. The height is shorter by about 3/4"

Saves 30 bucks... Same power rating as all the 50cc bike batteries

I did a little searching for those and all I found were still about twenty five after shipping.  I can get the Everstart at Walmart for about that...

Everlast dealers sell them for 10 bucks.

Here's the first one I found... Free ship. They are around... three years ago I bought them for 3 bucks @ in a case of 9
