Why is 12k or 20k considered the end of life on a scoot?

Those rules don't apply to cars or M/Cs why scoots?

20k is only considered done if you don't take care if it well. I have 20,000 on my B&W and it's running better than new. Change the oil and final drive oil ever 1000 and adjust the valves every 1000. Just got back from 340km to the beach and back through the mtns.

   I got 60,000 km. on my downtown,  and it seems to run better year after year, going on three years now,  with the mod. on the variator the rpm. is lower at 65 to 70 mph   6,000 rpm. down to 5,400 rpm. not pushing it,  next Ill try the 21/12  14 gram sliders see if changes anything,  original sliders are 20/12  14 gram,  original rollers are   20/12/  15 1/2 grams,.  the meter you sold me says every thing is normal,

I had never heard that 12 or 20K is considered the end of life of a scooter. Where did you hear that?

The actual life of any scooter or motorcycle depends on many factors.  Some small scooters, especially the cheaper ones may be worn out in less that 12K miles.  Larger, well made scooters may last well beyond 100K miles if properly maintained.

I have nearly 19K miles on my Super 8 150 and over 24K on my Sport City 250.  Neither show any signs of wearing out.

I have not heard this either. Although I can understand why some may get this kind of lifespan however short. These Honda inspired Kymcos should last nearly a lifetime (assuming LONG lifetime) considering how they are built and with reasonable maintenance. We, on this forum, go beyond reasonable, and dote on our machines so most of our bikes should wind up in some pyramid somewhere!

My agilty had over 55 k on it befor it went to scooter heaven.

I think that mostly comes from the glut of cheap Chinese scooters that flooded the market about 10 years ago. They were so poorly built that they only had a short lifespan.

I thought 12k-20k applied to 50cc's only?  Chinese 50cc: 0-12000 miles, Name brand 50cc: 20,000+ miles.  I read this somewhere.
