Engine oil weight type.
« on: March 27, 2015, 03:01:30 AM »
Hello,

The service manual recommends SAE 5W-50.  I have been following that spec since week 2, week 1 it was on mineral for the running in procedure.

The oil which i have been using is Petronas Syntium 1000 Full Sys API SM 15w-50.
Perhaps it's NOARK rating is bad as in a 5000km service cycle, it did burn about 100ml of oil.

I am looking at perhaps an API SN oil next, but unsure of the weighting, a 50 weight is quite hard to find especially if API SN.

Anyone tried a different spec of oil? I am curious how the engine performed on oil other than a 50.

Have been using Mobil 0-40 synthetic since break-in. the oil chart in the owner's manual has 50wt for the top two very hot environments with 10W40 in the middle where Tennessee should be most of the time. Was using Castrol 10W40 syntec until they got greedy then switched to the MObil. Seems to work well.

Forgot to add why I am following the 50weight oil.  I am in a tropical country that is right on the equater, hence hot all around.

In a tropical country where it is always warm you can run oil that is a little thicker because you don't have cold starts.  Of course, how many people ride two wheeled scooters / motorcycle in cold conditions?  I like 15w40 because it is inexpensive, has been the standard for years across scooters / motorcycles and I change it every 1200 miles / 1900 km.  I'm not saying there aren't better oils or grades but this keeps things working great and keeps the cost down but because it is only 1 quart of oil then synthetic for those that really ride a lot can be a good investment.

I ran 5w40 Motul in my B&W and actually noticed a slight power increase over 10w40. But imho i like to roll with a little less power, but added protection from my oil. This is also my opinion, but synthetic is worth the cost, it breaks down much slower than conventional oil. If you do have to go cheap and use Dino oil, diesel oil is the best choice 15w40, very high "strength" for the super high load diesel engines have to go through.

The guy that had my people first used 5w-40. I am using 5w-50. Oil loses a decent ammount of viscosity (not weight, weight is wrong, the w is for winter) after the initial sheer. Thats why I stick with the tougher oil. I used Castrol Edge first and it seemed ok. Now I'm using Motorcraft. To me it's a no brainer to spend maybe four more dollars on the oil change to meet kymco's recommendation.

I use 10w-40 Valvoline 4 stroke motorcycle oil, and I use 80w-90 Lucas Gear Oil in the gearbox. Not a big fan of using synthetics on a scoot, just a personal preference though!

Will probably go with a 40 weight oil, semi-syn and change it every 4000km. It'll be much more economical than sourcing a 50 weight oil which has an approximate 25% premium over a 40 weight.
