Performance Ignition Coil upgrade
« on: April 10, 2015, 09:46:38 AM »
I am considering buying a performance ignition coil to improve spark but am curious to know if anyone has experienced better performance? or is it no better than a stock coil

You won't feel anything. Consider this, is a $20 "racing" coil better than the $50 OEM Kymco coil? No!!!! It's just orange!!!!
2002 Kymco B&W 300; MRP 78MM "300CC", Naraku cam, Yoshimura rS3 exhaust, 17g Sliders, Yellow torque spring drilled airbox, stock carb #115 main #40 pj.

2001 "Yamaha" Zuma AKA MBK Booster; MHR OverRange, Dellorto 19mm BHBG, Polini "big" intake, RS-3 Rear shock, Stock cylinder.

My best $7 ignition improvement was to replace the stock NGK plug with an Iridium NGK spark plug.
This was on advice from several forum members.
No idea about power improvement - but it smoothed and steadied the idle considerably - most noticeable while sitting at a light in traffic when you DO NOT want to feel/hear any faltering in the idle!
Find the correct Iridium replacement for the stock NGK on NGK fitment chart.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

Mine has been inside for 35000km, no problems. Took it out not that long ago just to see how it looks like.  A ok.
Iridium plugs should be good for at least 60000km [emoji6]

That would be a waste of money.
I also have iridium plugs in my motorcycle. They have been inside for 55000km, no problems.
Took them out last week just to see how they look like, they are still good.
Iridium plugs last very long [emoji6]

I've found it depends on how well the engine is ruining, if its rich it'll foul iridium plugs fast. But generally they last forever almost. Cars are rated at 100k these days with iridium.

Upgraded camshaft, free flowing exhaust, larger carb, 150cc cylinder kit, larger ported head etc etc. depends on how much you want to spend and what you want out of it. Also a lot of these mods should only be undertaken if you know a fair amount about working on engines, or else you'll end up with a screwed up 125.
