Crazy talk...or not!
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:56:31 AM »
So, the fellow at the Kymco shop told me 2 things I found odd;

1. valve adjustment is not really required
2. tire balancing is not required

  I guess He does not ride over 20 mph, and scraps his scooter at the end of the year,  that way you dont have to winterize it,  or buy new tires,

Tire balancing is not USUALLY required, although valve adjustment is always required!!!! Go give the man a slap.

When I first bought my scooter a few years back, the dealer was very much the same way. They had a "giggly" approach to scooters. They didn't take them seriously. I used a different mechanic and had him do everything (minus some warranty work).

Funny thing is, I went into that same Kymco dealer yesterday and their tone is very different. They have loads of scooters on the floor (equal to their motorcycles) and a lot of them had red ribbons on them meaning they were sold. When talking to the shop guy about batteries he started to go over maintenance schedules with me lol So one of three things happened: they either realized the significance and reality of the scooter market or they realized the money they were losing by dismissing any maintenance work.... or both.

I agree with the others. Go slap your service guy! haha

Hey Budz, by chance are you in Phoenix? I had the same thing happen to me at a dealer here. They didn't seem to care about routine maintenance at all.

Good luck with your scoot and ride safe, mscmkr

This is nothing but a shop being lazy. The shop here in Phoenix told me the same thing. Then  I took my Like in to get an oil change and valve oil change because I sold it and the buyer met me there. They never touched the bike. Never changed either of the oils at all but told me it was ready. Pretty messed up right? I just love some people!

Please check in your owner's manual for the maintenance schedule for all kinds of stuff, like valve checks, oil, gear oil, brake fluid. Usually is a pretty good source of info.
If you do not have an owner's manual I think you can download them from KYMCO web site.

Sure it may not need an adjustment  - but it should have had them checked at the 600 mile service.
So, if it hasn't been checked in its life - it should now.
I guess if you have a very educated scooter engine ear - you can extend the maint. intervals - but the valves should be checked before you start down that road.

My manual says every 3000 and in the initial 300km service. My dealer told me to take it at 1000km instead of 300 and didnt do the valve check. Said wasnt really necesary.. suggested to check every 4000. I'd probablly do that but wanted to hear in the real world from real users what was the time to perform the work.
