How much insurance needed for my Kymco 150?
« on: April 28, 2015, 08:53:53 PM »
Hello everyone.

I just purchased a used Kymco People 150 and need to buy insurance on it. How much insurance do I really need for this scooter?

Should I be looking at comprehensive coverage? etc...

I purchased it for less than $700.

Also, I am in California so I must have insurance.

Any suggestions and recommendations for insurance companies is much appreciated.

thank you

Think past the price of the scooter.
Do you own anything of value? A home etc.

You want at least enough coverage for the eventual crash. If you have just liability and minimum medical all that then you go crash your scooter on a corner, your SOL. If you have full coverage they will buy you a new scooter, and the value of the people 150 is most likely higher than $700 so you'll end up coming out ahead. Same thing if: it gets stolen, tipped over in a parking space, uninsured hits you, and many many more situations.

People dont realize that if you scratch or dent a Porsche or Mercedes or some very expensive fancy car, you could lose your shirt as the repair bill could be very high especially if the owner fights for total restoration and wont settle for aftermarket parts or slightly non matching paint..

Lets hope the accident isn't much more serious then with someone getting hurt.

I would not worry about collision to a $600 MV but towing insurance is good to have also.

AMAC1680 said it best, cover yourself! If you hit someone they could sue you for a lot...

I have full coverage on my Like 200i, but only because I just bought it, after owning it for a few years, i'll bump it down to liability only. It's garage kept, and when i'm at work, the bike is behind a security gate with security guards so I never have to worry about it when i'm commuting, if I go into the city to run an errand, now that's why I have full coverage! I also use a U-lock & cable, although rarely have anything to lock to, anything to deter a thief from just picking up your bike and throwing it in the back of a pickup truck takes only 2 seconds! Unfortunately scooters are stolen quite often here in Austin, TX (all the hipsters drive them), so full coverage for me was a no brainer.

I park my scooter in our apartment lawn next to the post office. I have a 1/2" marine chain, $30 lock, and 1/2" thick Eye Bolt attached to a railroad tie.

If someone wants to steal my scooter, it will take about 3 people to load it onto a truck or someone carrying very large bolt cutters. They would have to take the scooter with risk of being  seen by various neighbors.

I still carry full coverage though.

Exactly. If you own more than a scooter and you want to keep it, get a higher liability policy. The price of the scooter is nothing compared to being sued for the limits on your home, bank accounts, gold teeth, etc.
