Just bought a new 2012 Super 8 50 2t. Hello everyone.
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:37:16 AM »
Hey everyone. I just bought a brand new leftover 2012 Super 8 50 2t from my local dealer. I live in Brooklyn, NY and am using the scooter for commuting and running errands in my neighborhood. I was tired of using my car for 2 mile trips that require 20 minutes to find parking. :)

The thing rides beautifully, but I'm looking to de-restrict it. While it does hit 30, that stretch from 20mph to 30mph is a crawl. I need to be able to hit 30mph a little more readily to keep up safely with traffic. After it breaks in I'll do further mods, but for now just a factory de-restrict would be nice.

I've read a lot of threads here, but I'm seeing a lot of confusing/conflicting information, and the line between a derestirct and a mod starts to become blurred. All I know so far is

  • Smooth Variator boss
  • Airbox snorkel insert gets removed
  • Restriction in exhaust?

And then the above requires an upjet. Correct? I've got over 10 years of experience as a car mechanic, but bikes apply slightly different concepts (CVT, etc) so I've got something new to learn.

Also how strict is Kymco about mods/derestriction when it comes to the warranty?

Congrads, nice bike and wc to the forum.

You are 100% correct in those 3 items.

Also consider 7 or 8 gm Dr Pulley sliders and a purple malossi or similar 1500 RPM Contra spring.

I replaced the fuel hoses and added a automotive fuel filter from nappa.

Convert to a good quality (I use Amsoil Dominator) synthetic oil ASAP when scooter is ready for it in 500 to 1000 miles.

I am about to sign over my 1997 Saturn Wednesday that I have kept running myself for 9 years. You will do well converting to scooter mechanics.

And most of all: THANKS FOR TAKING TIME READING THROUGH THE OTHER THREADS!!!!!!!

Just want to add. If you cant get the exhaust welded for a good price or want to keep it stock, people are having luck with the Naraku Street legal Exhaust working as well as an unrestricted Kymco Exhaust.

I was actually curious about the exhaust. From what I hear there's two issues. One is the emissions/recirculation pipe and the other is that there's a washer inside the pipe? Basically forcing the exhaust through a really small hole? The Naraku exhaust seems expensive. What would be the benefit to it over something like this? http://www.racingplanetusa.com/exhaust-tecnigas-nextr-kymco-horizontal-p-108-1.html?backcPathco=1&cPath=2_21356#.VUfQKc4-Ci4

Just quieter?

Technigas is a nice exhaust and a high performance chambered exhaust. I'm just a bit paranoid that in my small town, Id get pulled over with that exhaust. I already raise a few eyebrows since I can hit Main St at 40 MPH while other scooters ride the shoulder.

Since I dont have a high performance exhaust, I cant really advise too much on getting that pipe to work at its max potential. But read Scootz's thread, he's loving his Techinigas. So yes its an option.

I'm guessing it's a bit on the loud side? :) It also looks like a high-RPM tuned pipe which would probably be less than ideal for the stop and go traffic I drive in. Maybe this would be a better option?

http://www.racingplanetusa.com/exhaust-tecnigas-silent-kymco-sf10-p-106-1.html?backcPathco=1&cPath=2_21356#.VUgpHc4-Ci4

In any case I should probably wait for this thing to break in first before I do anything. As it is it only has 17 miles on it so I've still got a bit to go. Can I expect the engine to "loosen up" a bit as time goes on?

I just installed new Tecnigas Next-R on People 50 2T.  This pipe fits People 50 2T, Super 9, Super 8, and some others.  I have older Tecnigas pipe on 2003 Super 9 LC and it's loud, especially with pod air filter.  However, with stock airbox, the new pipe was surprisingly quiet, even with pod air filter it was fairly quiet IMO.  I now think my old Tecnigas pipe needs to have the muffler repacked.

For city traffic top speed 30mph or so, I am not sure you would be happy with Tecnigas Next-R pipe.  Low end, my 05 People 50 2T actually performs really well with stock pipe.  I was lucky to find an older one that has very few restrictions like the new ones.  I think if you get a quiet aftermarket muffler with restrictions you can easily remove, you will be very happy.  I did notice the pipe you last linked to may have an internal restriction that would be hard to remove, I would be leery of that one.

And congrats on your new Super 8 50 2T.  I have 05 People 50 2T and 03 Super 9 LC.  I would love to have Super 8 50 2T, very cool scooter IMO.

Cheers

Yeah I don't want to lose torque as I ride 2-up on it pretty much daily, and like mentioned it's stop and go. I would be happy with hitting 30mph easily as opposed to right now where it hits 20mph easily and then crawls to 30mph if you stay in it for a minute.

The smooth boss and #82 jet will get you to 35 MPH. Did your bike come with these ????

I would do those ASAP. It will loosen up.

I did not break mine in per Instructions as if I followed them, Id be relegated to putting around our back yard. Just vary speed frequently and dont WOT for more than 60 secs. WOT - release for a minute or 2 - and WOT again.

Varying speed to seat the rings is very important. Steady low speed I believe is bad. Vary, vary, vary.

I took my cylinder head off a few weeks ago and the cylinder was very smooth no sign of scouring.

I had 3500 miles on the bike.

It probably doesn't. The revs start climbing after 20mph and seem quite high by the time I actually do hit 30mph. So start with the smooth boss and 82 jet? Should I leave the rollers and contra spring alone?

Yes smooth boss and 82 jet.

I dont know the effects of changing the rollers on a pure stock exhaust.

This is an interesting read.

This is what all of us want to avoid (scouring the pistons and cylinder walls). Not too sure how this piston got this bad. Looks like it sucked in gritty wet mud IMO.

I just ordered the smooth boss and now need to order jets. Where do I buy them? I'm going to buy a variety of them to make things easier in the future as I increase my fueling requirements.

jetsrus probably has what you need.

I have People 50 2T and Super 9 LC, both take the same jets.  I think you probably have Keihin PB16 carb, that takes N424-74C Genuine keihin for slow jet and 99101-116 Genuine keihin for main jet.  The cheaper OEM equivalent for slow jet didn't work for me, so I bought the more expensive genuine Keihin.  The cheaper OEM equivalent for main jet works well, so I buy the OEM equivalent for the main jet and save a few $'s.

I don't have 2012 Super 8 50 2T, so I recommend you measure the size of the jets you take out of your carb and verify the above recommended jets fit your carb.  Probably does, but no guarantee and jetsrus will not make refund if you order the wrong jets.

You can also drill out your jets, many do that.  Cheers
