An accident occurred on the Glenn Hwy. yesterday.  A less than 150cc scoot was aggressively tailgated by a cager.  Tragedy that could have been avoided on so many levels.

UPDATE 7:00 p.m.: A moped driver was killed Saturday in a crash that took place just before 6:30 p.m., Anchorage Police wrote in a press release.

"The crash was between a vehicle and a moped in which the driver of the moped was killed," police wrote.

According to police, the crash took place on the outbound lane of the highway, approximately one quarter mile past the Fort Richardson overpass.

Police say that the far left lane of the highway remains open and ask that drivers merge to the left and be cognizant of first responders and emergency vehicles.


ORIGINAL: All outbound lanes of the Glenn Highway are temporarily shut as police respond to a car crash near Fort Richardson, Anchorage Police wrote in a press release Saturday.

"It was a serious crash," police spokesperson Renee Oistad told Channel 2 news.

Few details are known at this time.

I did not include follow up info.  This section of the Glenn Hwy. is a divided hwy., an expressway.  The moped was traveling well under the posted 65 mph.  Witnesses said the cager was following the moped and charging the rider, attempting to force him to pull to the shoulder.  From the picture, you can see that the Mazda drove right up the rear of the scooter nearly to the front of the seat.  There were no braking skid marks by either vehicle.

Thanks for the clarification. Always like to know details so the info might prevent it from happening to us. Cager should be charged with murder in my book. Someone tailgates me I'm pulling over to let them pass, 2 wheels will not win in an argument with 4 wheels.

Odd how the car hit on the far left side. Many of the scenarios in my head have the car hitting middle or right side... Did the scooter swurve left in an attempt to block the cager from passing?

I wouldnt take a moped on a highway. It was hard enough country driving in my newer kia forte yesterday without being tailgated and passed going 10 over speed limit.

But in the end, that car was more wrong if the car ran into the back of the moped while tailgating it and having knowledge the moped was going slow.

But that doesn't look like a moped in the picture shown, it looks like a larger than 50cc scooter. But someone is saying it a 50cc BMS Federal  Scooter and it looks like one comparing photos.

From a video report by KTVA CBS, the car hit the scooter nearly center hood.  They are fused together just left of center with the hood buckled half way to the windshield from the riders impact.

I think we have a law in Connecticut that if you can avoid an accident, you have to.

You just cant see someone pull out in front of you denying your right of way and speed up and hit them claiming they pulled out in front of you. You have to avoid the accident if you can whether you had the right of way or not.

The rider was a 66 yr. old man   Just a couple of years older than me.  That doesn't feel real comfortable.  I really expected an underage rider taking an under 150cc on to the hwy. during heavy traffic time.  If he lived or was going to anywhere north of Fort Richard there is only one road and that is the Glenn Hwy.  Same would have been true going south as only thr Seward Hwy. goes that direction.  That means you are legally trapped in Anchorage if under 150cc.  There are bike paths but you will need a good lawyer.

The way the comments are going about that highway, I dont think I'd take a motorcycle on that highway.
