XC500EFI after long ride, idle very low

XC 500 EFI.
Hi all.
I recently noticed this issue, after a long freeway ride, and then coming to a stop, the idle drops to below 1000rpm. The oil light flickers wildly.
If revs above 1000,then no oil light.
Normally idle is at 1100.
Driving around town, and the suburbs does not produce this phenomenon.

Online research shows  possible dirt on some sensor in the throttle body. Brake cleaner sprayed in there resolved that poster's issue.
What say you?

How many miles on the beast? Any engine check light? If you have a good dealer close they should scan it for free.

36000 km, a mix of city and freeway. Actually after a 35km freeway drive at idle above 1000 the oil lamp was flickering. The bike shop sent me a kymco manual page which states that at idle when warm, it will flicker OCCASSIONALY, but that is not the word I would use here

I have a Chinese scanner that I can use in xp through some virtual shell(I forget the name). No engine check light.

UPDATE:I called to find out if it was ready.
Long story short, it was. Happiness!
Parts replaced:Electrical bits to improve cold start,two names I remember,regulator,starter motor, but there were more parts.
Other parts replaced:oil pump,water pump repaired as it was leaking.

There was a water leak I had to turn back for to get one hose clamp tightened.(I saw that at the garage when filling up)
The shop emptied out my FUEL tank on testing!

On the way home, it broke again,%$#@*
Suddenly it was holding back, and then cut out.
Started again first time, immediately, more than once, so that issue looks to be fixed,
although I would like to have seen if the first start in the morning was actually sorted.
To do this start issue fix, the starter motor was replaced, plus other electronics, including a special modified item to rectify
the XC500 cold start issue.I only had to pay for the starter.

The oil lamp issue: I cant say if that is resolved, as I did not even get home yet, and it broke.
Although there was an oil light shining when after I started it once I had parked in the yellow line,
it would shine/flicker when the revs were coming down, at about 2000rpm.
This happened twice, when I blipped the throttle.

At that point, I saw the water expansion tank was almost at the LOW mark.


I then attempted to drive the scoot back to the shop, but the engine was very sluggish, and
mechanically noisy, and it could not make it up a hill, so I had to get it picked up by the shop.

I thought I smelt coolant, but cant be 100% sure, just an impression I had.

Anyways, on the way home, I told my wife we will celebrate with some chippies!
I cant let ultra weird circumstances like these stuff up my day/week/life.

Keep us posted. It sounds 1/2 fixed, and 1/2 broken.

The oil light flashing is due to low pressure or thin oil. I would swap to a full synthetic brand as they are more stable when hot, and if ti continues I would swap out the pressure sender just to be sure. Dirt in the sender will make it erratic.

I think he might have said they replaced that sending unit already, in a different thread. Might be wrong.

I tend to look for failed sensors before believing them. Just a habit.

Yep, guys, that oil sender unit has been replaced twice now.  1/2 fixed & 1/2 broken;sounds about right. Currently fully synthetic 5w40 oil.

I have also noted that the water temp arrow has crept upwards by 1-2mm.
But I did not worry about it because I have seen that the gauges do not always return to the exact same position the next time the scoot is started, so my thinking is it is normal.
The higher temp has been around since the head got replaced in Jan 2015.

Maybe switch to a thicker oil. Your bike is mass produced, and could have loose tolerances.

OK, this idea comes to me; what about the issue being heat related?

Zombie,  the oil was the standard 20w50 and the oil light was flashing when at idle after a long highway stint. The oil got changed to the high spec stuff to help with the cold start issue, which seems to have been sorted with electronic parts and starter motor. That high spec oil has only been in for a month.

That makes sense. The crank drives the oil pump, and play there will lower the pressure.

The bigger picture is the con rod big end will now have the exact same wear in it. The big end mirrors the play in the crank bearing.

Inform the dealer to swap the crank/con rod, and bearings or keep the bike.

The crank comes with the bearings but some shops will replace the bearings, and charge warranty for the crank assembly.

Make SURE they replace the oil pump again. That play in the bearings also transfers into the oil pump bushing.

Email them a copy of this post if it is easier.

Crank has been replaced. And oil pump.
I hardly turn the throttle now, and already she is cruising at 80km.,with plenty throttle left to spare, which I have not tried, still running it in.

Great to be back on two wheels.
