Had a chat with a driver today
« on: July 08, 2015, 11:26:37 PM »
Riding home from work today in a pretty heavy rain on my LIKE200eye.
Swept up on a posted 25MPH up hill bend ....that has a horrible off camber curve, with lots of man hole covers at the top.
As I am anticipating how to handle this turn up ahead - I look in my long necked Eyetalian mirrors to see a silver Honda SUV approaching rapidly from behind.
OK, I glance down to see that I am doing @32MPH on this 25MPH street....so these Ohioans cannot be too PO'd at me for driving the speed limit. (7 over is bare minimum correct speed for these jerks)
I look again and she is in my tail light....and is sweeping to my right to pass me on the sidewalk side of the street!
I laid on my horn as I watch her pass my right hand grip (middle aged female)...and stayed on the horn and gave her my best impression of an Eyetalian WTH with my left arm in her rear view mirror. (not a WTF - no fingers were involved)

The Vespa god was with me, as 1.5 miles ahead she has to stop for a long light at a big intersection.
I motor up next to her window and flip up my visor to remind her that:
"That was a 25MPH street"
"Passing me on the right is dangerous to me"
"Overtaking on the right is also damned illegal!"

She did the proper thing. Kept her window closed, and ignored me....then motored off.

I felt better. I never do this....darned stupid these days.

If only you could key her paint job when she rolled off. That, or use photon torpedoes. Glad to hear you're all right.
Some people are just jerks.

I have attempted to explain the genetic flaws in some drivers' lineage. They usually just smile at the fool on the blue and white plastic scooter and move on.

I vote for the photon torpedoes!!!  ;D

So many times I have thought that there is justification (stupid drivers who don't give a $#it about others) for a turret-mounted .50 cal where my top case is currently. Just too many idiot cagers out there these days!   >:(

I had a similar issue last week Sunday on my way to work.

Pulled out onto my road and was doing 35 in a 30 just to avoid a speeding ticked. Some black SUV with 172 as first numbers of his plate sped up and got on my tail. He then passed me close forcing me onto the shoulder. I gave him the clear middle finger and he pulled over. So I pulled over the side of him and parked the scooter. I put my face to his window and yelled at him I was doing 35 in a 30. He yelled at me for driving an unregistered vehicle (justifying possible vehicular manslaughter).

I yelled 3 times back that I didn't have to be registered; and after the third time telling the idiot, he took off real fast.

He purposely ran me off the road thinking he was in the right because my scooter wasn't tagged.

I have since mounted a dash cam on my bike as at this point it would be my word against his.

I was pissed.

You justly generated fear and memory. She may have been indifferent on the outside but was hysterical on the inside. She may even remember the whole point. Glad you are still here!

My favorite solution: carry a pack of super 3. Stickers that don't peel off that say "I suck at driving" and stick it on their drivers window. It really bugs me more than anything when someone does something like this and won't even give you the time of day to apologize or even look at you.

You should have adjusted her side view mirror. It's the least you could do. 😈

TroutBum, with today's electrical controlled mirrors, screwing with their mirrors might cost you plenty.  I like the sticker idea.  Years ago I had a customer, originally from Romania, who drove a VeloSolex with clips on his forks to hold a broom handle.  I knew of two windshields he took out.

In the MSC  class the instructor emphasized taking command of your lane by positioning yourself in or near the left tire track. In traffic I work to do this to prevent drivers passing me IN MY LANE!......(happened 2 x in 3 mos.)....now ththey're going around me on my right! :-) :-)
Just amazingly stupid...but America has such lame licensing practices that a chimp could get a card.. + once he gets it he'll never have to give it up.

So very true. American licensing practices are a complete joke. After dealing with my 85 year old mother in law, I am totally amazed that the state renewed her DL after she caused 3 accidents because of her slow reflexes. We finally took away her keys and sold her car when she had to go into assisted living. There's no way in hell she should have been driving. We need mandatory driving tests after the age of _____???

Speaking of idiot drivers, I pulled up behind a kid in a BMW waiting to pull out of a parking lot today. I was about a car length behind him when he put his car in reverse. I started to honk my horn over and over and he just kept coming. He never stopped and smashed right into my car. He had plenty of time to hear my horn but he just ignored it and hit my car. It looked like he was going to leave when I got out of my car. It was clear he could care less that he hit me. Lucky for him there was no damage. I should have flopped on the ground and faked whiplash.
I'm extremely lucky I was not on my bike. That jackass would have just ran me over. Amazing how people are now. They just don't give a damn.

Ride safe everyone, mscmkr

An easy way to get the upper hand is say "I got it all on video. Let's call a cop over and see what he thinks", while you pull out your phone.  8)

Yelling with motorists has escalated into violence before, and adjusting side mirrors just makes them hate all motorbikers, so it's best to avoid emotional behavior.  Definitely speak up to them though.  I've gotten apologies before.

Which dash cam did you get?  I'm looking for an inexpensive, low maintenance one that's easy to plug in & remove (People 250).
