Can you give more detail?  Were you accelerating, cruising, throttle position?  Was there a loss of power or did it take off?  Did it stop on it's own?  Will need more info to try and troubleshoot.

Well, if you suddenly experience high revs on a cvt, I would say that something has snapped in the transmission...

First thing I thought of was the belt snapping also.  Did the high revvs remedy itself? If it did it's probably not the belt.

He just finished his own cvt work! A little time to open the case will tell.

In that case, I would think that the variator or clutch nuts came loose.

The nut that is on there should be a "capture nut" Meaning it is slightly deformed so as not to back off. They are similar to nylok nuts in the fact they are not meant to be re-used. A new nut should be installed each time you remove one. Like a gasket or a hose clamp. If you do use a locktite compound, use Locktite BLUE. It is made to be removable. The RED is for permanent installations. The heat on the crank end is not enough to be a factor.
