..warm air induction pics...
« on: December 03, 2009, 07:43:18 PM »
…so, I’ve been battling this temperature change thing and had just decided to jet rich (110) and deal with the loss in performance until cold weather really sets in…but dang, when you’re used to your machine performing well, it’s hard to be happy with something less…so I jet back to 105 and was running with a sock over my air filter in the cold morning air. .which was working just fine, but looked really stupid…I remembered zombie talkin’ about attaching a tube between the filter and carb, to induct warm air from around the engine shroud into the air stream…didn’t have enough room to do it there, because the air filter would be against my rear fender…played around with some of the stock airbox tubing, but couldn’t come up with anything that was functional, and looked nice too…so I drilled and tapped the end of the filter to allow the installation of a ¼” hose barb…Got me some ¼” fuel line and a lawnmower fuel shut-off valve from NAPA,  stuck a small brass filter that I had laying around on the other end of the tubing…a few cable ties to make it all look neat and…Instant warm air induction at the twist of a knob!!!!

SWEET!!! I love the Bronze filter! I kept thinking of the unfiltered air being force fed. ONE step ahead of me Bro! Looks like the tubing is a good size also. Keep us posted on the real effect.

That's a trick little setup!  Very well thought out and executed!  I like the shut-off valve for when you don't need it!  Where are you sticking the end of it, in the air shroud?

..Thanx dude!....this morning was the big test..31 degree F...Without the induction, at around 46-48 mph, on a long down-hill run, my engine started to bust out...couldn't go any faster..opened the valve, and made the exact same run...at 52 mph indicated...and if I hadn't ran out of hill, I think there was even one more left in the old girl....It's going to be even colder tomorrow..May even get snow!!!..gonna do some plug chops with and without...

..the bottom pic shows an opening in the engine shroud, just to the right of the intake..just kinda wedged the filter into that opening...it's all covered by the carb's rubber boot normally...nice and toasty, clean and dry in there...

I'm gonna put a manual choke on my scoot, so I can open it up at high speed to allow more fuel into the mix and see if that works. That way I can get more fuel and air in and more power out, since a motor is just an air pump anyway. I'll let you know how that goes.

That is an option that may work IF you also step down several sizes on your choke jetting. There is no way to control or adjust fuel flow through this jet w/out changing the size. Again it may work if you spend the time zeroing in the correct size. You may find you need to plug and custom size a jet as they may not go small enough to work as an "extra" jet. Good luck though!!!

I'm figuring on using a cable type I can push in and pull out to adjust as I'm riding maybe connect it to the throttle somehow. I'm still working on the details. It seems to be running fine except in the very top of the RPM range, so I don't need much except there.

In that case it may be easier to go up 1 size on your Main jet, and lower your needle 1 notch. A cable wont do it for you as the choke circuit is more of an "off-on" switch. The moment you open the choke the fuel is flowing w/ no control over it except for the jet itself. I do however believe a manual choke is a better option to run because you will always know if it is working or not.
