Odd: air filter never seems to need replacing

Every other service (2,400 miles) I check the air filter and to my surprise it's as clean as a new one. The sponge and paper filters look like new. Even tapping them and vacuuming the filter show no sign of dust and debris. Even with this at 5,000 I replaced the filter. Today while  performing a 10,400 mile service the scooter (oil changes) I checked the filter and again it was as clean as a new one. I checked to see if there was a leak in the airbox to see of the air flow was being bypassed. I checked the intake channel and it was clear. I'm stumped! I ride a lot of backroad and with our drought in California there is a lot of dust. I would have expected the filter to have some debris.

You're correct...I've had my spare in a box, waiting, for two years.
I get a little dust on the black plastic, but the filter never seems to collect any dirt.
But you  - riding in the desert that is now California....that is strange.

Something to do with the aerodynamics of the body-work ...keeping the filter in clean air above the road surface?
(it certainly isn't the hypersonic speeds I'm travelling)

I'm pretty certain that most of that howling I hear when I get near WOT is the air intake noise at high throttle....so where's the dirt?
Maybe B&L can tell us what goes on here?
(I did pick up a little debris, and some squirrel parts, when I took that counter-steering induced high-side dismount into the shrubs --- that night the Republicans tried to silence me with their Tractor Beam back during the Govmn't Shut Down of 2012, or '13.)

(Sharp eyed members say they can see the gleam of my spectacles where I landed in the shrubbery on the R side of the road. It  was only the many Counter Steering posts on this forum , which might have thoroughly confused a lesser man, and my new Walmart sneakers - which saved me.... to ride again.)

Funny you say this, I've noticed on the Like 200's I service they hardly ever need filters. I think it's just where the snorkel gets the air is far away from the tire and away from rain.

I have 6500 miles on my Like and have changed the air filter only once. I called B&L's shop and they said clean or change once a season. It is NEVER really plugged with dust. This year I only blew it out with air and re-installed. Next year I'll probably replace only because it easy.

I replaced mine at about 3000 miles. It was discolored and a little dirty from city road goo, but nowhere near plugged up. I actually cleaned the original one with an air hose and sprayed it. Looks good. I put it on the shelf.

I inspected at 2000km and looked new. Then At 4000km was very dirty dust and grime. Air box with dust and started to notice the lack of air flow. Changed and got 115kph speedo reading! Yaaay
