Which Kymco to purchase
« on: October 08, 2015, 03:29:58 PM »
Hello everyone,

This is my first post here on this forum. I'm looking to purchase a scooter so my wife and I can sight see area that we travel to with our RV. Right now I have a Honda Nighthawk 750S that I haul on my Versahaul Bike carrier. The problem I have is that the carrier weighs in at 85lbs and the bike is almost 500lbs. The hitch can handle the weight but hanging almost 600lbs 8 feet behind the rear axle really affects the handling of my RV. So we've decided on buying a scooter.

I've been to Taiwan a few times for business and decided that a Kymco is the scooter I want since it is so popular over there. Now I need help to figure out which model to get.

Here are some specs:

The wife and I have a combined weight of 350lbs.
We will not be travelling on any interstates (mostly urban riding)
I'd like the weight of the scooter to be in the 300 lb area.

I've done some research and the Like 200i seems like an option. I have seen other models (People S200, Super 8 150cc) but not sure if they would work for our needs.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The Like is a good choice. If it were still available in the States I'd suggest a Yager Gt 200i.

I know this is a Kymco forum, but you may also want to check out a Genuine Buddy scooter. They come in 125, 150, and 170cc versions. They are super light, super fast and very dependable. I recently bought one and can tell you from firsthand experience that they are more stable at faster speeds than the Like 200 (which I also own two of).

What is a Ling 150-4T? I cannot find anything online about it. Is it an old Kymco model?

I sold my Harley because I was getting too (65) old for the 648lb weight of it. I bought a Kymco People 150. It was a terrific little scooter. It weighed about 250 lbs, and had a top end of 56-58 with me riding alone. Not enough top end for a safe interstate commute, so I traded for a GTI300. It weighs about 100 lbs more (350), but has a top end over 80 mph. My mileage went down to about 68, but that is still respectable. I weigh about 215, and suggest you definitely try (with both riders) before you buy. Your combined weight of 350 may be too much for a 150 or even a 200cc scooter. It only takes one situation to cause a accident. Make sure your choice has enough power to get you out of any situation you may  find yourself in. I suggest a GTI300.

IMHO, 350 pounds is too much for a small scoot. Yes it will pull the both of you around but, not very good.
You will not be satisfied even on back roads.
In your situation, the least I would consider would be something like a Sportcity 250.
A Kymco Downtown 300 or a Kymco GTI 300 would be the best choice.

Keep in mind that the Like 200 is NOT a 200cc scooter. It is 163cc scooter. I concur with the other posters. You need at least 250cc or higher to safely transport two people with a combined weight of over 350 pounds.

My 2009 Super 8 150 easily handles my wife and I and we are over 350 lbs combined.  However, it would likely struggle going up steep hills.  My Sport City 250 also handles both of us easily except again on steep hills.  The real issue here is how comfortable you will be 2 up.  My wife is not very comfortable on the back of the Super 8 for any distance.  About 150 miles in a day is her max on the Sport City.  We got a Yamaha Majesty in May for 2 up riding.  It handles both of us fine but is nearly as heavy as your Nighthawk.

Its a different brand than kymco. I've had a kymco agility 50 and the ling and both are great scooters. We sold the kymco about two months ago and now unfortunately we are needing to sale the ling as well.

Any left over Kymco PEOPLE 250's in your area?
Great scooter, fast enough and with enough hp to deal with 2 riders wanting some mobility while parking the RV.
Or a step up would be a SYM 200, or 300. As good as a Kymco 300.
As a LIKE200i owner for two yrs.....I could recommend this scooter only for 5 mile or less....poking around campgrounds exploring....etc. reliable and will get these light rides done. Not in great comfort but you'll get there! :-)
300 scooters will weigh 150lbs more, at least.
Buddy -- unless they've a long wheelbase model are very short/small. Reliable but small.
Sit your selection....both of you. Test ride them....but at least sit them .
Do not listen to salesman if he tells you anything but, or under,   a SYM 200 is safe on a highway! Certainly NOT the LIKE200i.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I dont know how fast you need to go but to give you an idea my ex and I put thousands of miles on a 125 Cali Classic. Combined weight just shy of 300lbs. As long as I never asked for more than 50mph all was great.Of course that's sea level beach towns.

Point is any of the scoots mentioned will drag you and yours a round town no problem, it's surprising how few HP it takes. bigger issue is how the two of you fit on it.

All the best with the hunt !

When I recommended the Buddy in an earlier reply, I missed the part about you guys wanting to ride double. Yeah, while it is certainly capable of handling the weight, riding double would be tough on the passenger.

I own a People 250 and it is certainly a good choice, but it is considerably heavier than the Like 200 and will be a bit of a bear to get on your Versahaul.

Someone on another forum was looking for a scooter for the same reasons.  He wanted two up, haul on RV and under 300 lbs if possible.  The scooter he ended up with was a Sym HD200.  It's slightly over 300 lbs but will handle 2 people and tops out at 70MPH+.  If you can find a used Kymco Yager 200 it has similar performance and 2 people should fit.

I have done quite a bit of 2 up on my Aprilia SPort City 250 but it's around 350 lbs wet.

As you can see the seating is a bit tight.  I'm 6-2 and my wife is 5-7.

Another pic just because I feel like posting it:

The Sym HD200 and Kymco Yager 200 seem to be about the same size as my Sport City which is smaller than most 250cc scooters.

I have sat on a Like 200.  The seating position seems cramped for me but the seat should be long enough for a passenger.

Another thing to consider is the suspension.  Both my Super 8 and sport city have stiff suspensions so they handle a passenger well.  A small scooter with a softer suspension may not.
