Gear oil level?
« on: November 10, 2015, 01:00:23 AM »
I need to check my gear oil since the shop that changed it has left it with a small leak.
The repair manual says "The oil level shall be at the oil check blowhole." I assume they mean that when you remove the oil check bolt, you can just see the oil inside, and if it's visible toward the top, you're good to go.

Am I right with this?

Well, once I got the bolt off the oil started coming right out so I figure it has plenty! I closed her up, though without the ability to check proper torque. I tightened until it felt pretty snug, and didn't overdo.

Any feedback/advice welcome!

Did you check it on the side stand or center? A sight bit of oil grime is normal, any liquid oil is not good. It should be measured and NOT filled to the hole. Drain it and measure out 180cc of 80-90 gear oil.

It was on the center stand. Yeah, I was surprised it just started streaming out once the bolt was loosened. OK, guess I better take your advice: drain and reinject. Messy stuff; I think I'd rather pay people for this kind of thing.  : )

Thanks!

You are more than right! Super messy stuff. One drop seems to go everywhere. If you decide to DIY, Walmart sells a 2 cycle oil syringe in their oil filter sections that makes the job much easier, and hopefully, cleaner.
