Exhaust can time again
« on: January 03, 2016, 05:12:50 AM »
I had  a BMW f800gs slip-on can before which had  a nice deep rumbling sound.
I really liked it  but now there are metal bits rattling around in it,  and the sound has become too loud, so it is time to replace.

I found this can at a motorcycle grave yard.
It  was originally aluminium in colour.
A straight through.
What a bad mistake.
I then had a mesh welded into the baffle and I also screwed a washer on it to force the exhaust gases through the sound padding.
This worked for  20km,and then padding was all burnt out.

OH well, onto the next version.....

This is a Suzuki 750 exhaust can.
I had to get the front slip-on part adapted to fit the new second hand can, and the result can be seen.

It has been in for just over a week and and it still sounds nice and deep, with a slight breathless under current.... 😊

I thought the stainless steel would turn brown in no time because that is what happened with the BMW f800gs can, which is why it is black in the pic in the original post.

Only the 4 ss dome nuts on the front slip-on piece is turning brown.

So no high heat black for now.

This whole thread is a testament to inventiveness due to the exchange rate of 15.5:1 meaning,  I would have to sell my house to buy an original kymco exhaust.

I think the final result is acceptable.

If I could only afford a Malossi variator kit........ 😢

It sounds good.  Nice and quiet at idle yet a strong deep sound with a strange breathless accent ( hint of free flow throbbing) when at speed.
I like it almost as much as the BMW can,as this Suzuki can almost sounds like the BMW can.

One time I fitted some inserts into the stock rollers, like 0.5gr each. On my previous belt I was getting 155km at 8000rpm.
I since took out the inserts and had to replace the belt (old belt still looked like it would work for many 1000 more km)
Now it is 140 at 8000rpm.
Everything in CVT is stock.
Recently, I also had a recon clutch fitted as the bell from old clutch had warped, and the pads were wearing out at a strange angle.
NO difference in behaviour / performance but I have peace of mind there.

In the future I will look at another insert into the rollers.
The last implementation I just pressed them in, but the centrifugal force caused them to come out a bit and start scraping metal from the one edge of the roller runway, so I was getting concerned about permanent damage and big replacement cost, so out they went.

Now I ride at 120—130 with occasional bursts to 140 if required.
120 @6000rpm
130 @7000rpm
140 @8000rpm

I find myself driving slower now a days because driving it hard, has made a seriously large dent in my wallet .....

I don't know about you, but I start going cold turkey if I don't get a ride in every day.
This is so much fun,  it is amazing that it is actually legal.

If you do hwy driving id get heavier rollers. Btw 0.5 and 1gr. Its going to give less rpm at crusing speeds therefore less fuel.
Id get a set of dr pulleys 0.5gr heavier. Sliders do perform very well!!

30 gm stock. Dr pulley has 31 gm round rollers. I can find nothing heavier. :-*

Wkreps, re roller weights. 2010 will likely be EFI. The rollers are heavier for the EFI models. 33grams.

I am thinking I must find a friend who has a lathe to engineer me some inserts as I want to go up at least one gram, that will equal a drop of 500rpm at cruising speed.
